I don't know 🤷 imho the only career-nuking moves should be fraud and academic dishonesty. You're probably required to formally advise the first journal that you're removing it from submission (so you can affirm that the article is unencumbered to the second), but at that point surely you're fine?

I've got a formal withdrawal letter ready to fire off so that I can try to be professional and not dripping with bitterness. I'll give it a tiny little bit longer though, people get sick and things go wrong. Perhaps I can track down someone else in the editorial team... or is that overstepping?

I have absolutely emailed editors directly, it's their job. Don't forget that you are also doing _them_ a favour by choosing their venue for your research! I 100% agree that we need to also respect that things are harder with the *waves hands wildy*
