AHHHHdam Seats @iknowadamseats.bsky.social · 17/06/2026Lukewarm TTRPG opinion: more people need to consider writing with the intent of their work being run in a 2-3 hour time block at cons. Yeah, old D&D modules did this, some modern games have a "one shot" ruleset but very little attention is paid towards delivering a reliable short showcase piece. 1113414 134
Seamus Conneely of Cannibal Halfling Gaming @cannibalhalfling.bsky.social · 17/06/2026I only ever run two hour slots at Games on Demand, and it definitely influences both the games I choose to run while doing so and the games I write and write for. 020 2
Josh Simons @joshuamsimons.com · 17/06/2026Writing one shots is such a great way for early career writers to make a name for themselves too! 030 3
J. Walton @ludopolitics.bsky.social · 17/06/2026This is 100% how and why one-shot games were (re)invented and became popular in 2000s indie RPG circles -- because they worked well as con demos / sessions. 020 2
The Ken In Yellow @kenlowery.bsky.social · 17/06/2026Also an excellent test if your game really does hang together 010 1
Lord Fenrir 🔜 Howloween 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈 @lordfenrir.bsky.social · 18/06/2026I try my best to write mine this way. A quest to a small five room dungeon with some encounters along the way and tips on which to cut if you're running a bit late. 020 2
Mrs.Platypus @mrsplatypus.bsky.social · 19/06/2026I will preface this by saying I have very little experience with con games. But my own rule zero in game design is that you shouldn't asshole-proof your game, because they are not your target audience. And I kinda feel this is incompatible with designing for a con game? 100 1
AHHHHdam Seats @iknowadamseats.bsky.social · 18/06/2026Yoinking this back to the main thread: @clearkeep.bsky.social has done a very good example of what I'm talking about for a duet-mode for Planet Raygun, a CfB game that has been in the works for some time now. You get to see all the main bits that make the game feel cool w/o doing every little thing.Mike Martens | Clear Keep@clearkeep.bsky.socialHere’s the recording of the playtest session (with @oxsago.bsky.social), if that’s at all interesting. youtu.be/Iw-x5ln5TMA?...youtu.bePlanet Raygun - "The Rise and Fall of Duke Universe" - Shadow of a Ghost 10YouTube video by Clear Keep 131 3
AHHHHdam Seats @iknowadamseats.bsky.social · 17/06/2026I know I bang this drum periodically - one of the only paid writing credits I have is in fact about this for The Wassailing of Claus Manor - but it's been on my mind since running @gendershrug.bsky.social's What A Horrible Knight, which is intended for that exact time block & situation to teach MB. 1170 17
L Newman | TTRPG Creator @fruits136.bsky.social · 17/06/2026This is why I playtest my one shots repeatedly. When I tell people this takes x amount of time, I want that to be true and accurate. No one wants a one shot that becomes a two shot that never gets finished 010 1
jhdale @jhdale.bsky.social · 18/06/2026A lot of people run TTRPG sessions that short, you do want it to be viable. But for a con game you cut out a lot of backstory, character creation, etc., things that enhance roleplay and engagement. That's necessary for limited time one-shots, less great for friends you game with regularly. 010 1
Dominic Bytes - Synthwave Cyber Femboy @dominicbytes.vtubers.social · 17/06/2026When I did product demos for assorted TTRPG companies way back when, I had a handful of system agnostic scenarios I could reliably run in short bursts AND string together if I ended up with a very dedicated group for the whole weekend (which happened more than once). 120 2
