While sharing a conference hotel room with @styrkowiec.bsky.social, I asked him what he thought the contralateral delay activity (CDA) – an ERP component tightly linked to item-based load in both MOT and WM – would do if a subject was tracking moving objects and remembering content in those objects?

He thought the CDA would be driven by the number of objects being tracked. I thought that the CDA could be driven by the memory load or there might be an interaction. We realised there was something to test (and after taking a while to convince the Eds), we were ready to go.

We combined MOT with the whole-report WM task – subjects had to track one or two moving discs, while also remembering the colors of those discs. There were either one or two colors per target discs, so either two or four colors to remember in total. We had subjects do MOT-only as well to compare.
