Multiple-object tracking (MOT) and visual working memory (WM) have long been thought to share cognitive resources. Could an item-based indexing mechanism – like Pylyshyn's FINSTs and Treisman's object files – be underlying both the tracking of objects and how we maintain representations in memory?
