let’s call it there

The road back to Tuliyollal is shorter than their path north. It goes quick, and the string that ties Mharwyb to Moenlorh tightens tight and then eventually falls slack. Thancred assures her the separation is fine. He looks eager to see her unencumbered enough to rest.
They lie next to each other on the side of the road.
The moon shines above them. There is something intimate about their shoulders touching without Moenlorh between them. Mharwy catches the glint of Thancred's eye in the starlight. He gazes at her too.
He orders, "Bed. We've another full day before we're back in Tuliyollal."
It is indeed the next sunset when they enter the city. The sky is orange and then a deep, dark blue as they traverse busy market stalls and stop for tacos. They are tired but full when they arrive back at the For'ard Cabins. Everything is as Mharwyb left it. She slumps her travel bag by the door.
"Do sleep in, won't you? This is no time to pick up morning jogging," Thancred says. It's a joke, mostly. He's a polite fulm outside the door. He tells her: "Goodnight. Thank you for inviting me. Your family are lovely people, really, and I had a pleasant time."
"Do you want to come inside?"

Mharwyb has her travel jacket slumped halfway down her arms and back. The room is shadowed without any candles lit. She lifts her head to Thancred, and shows him a familiar desire in her eyes.
"Ah," he says, and then adds nothing at all. He stays stanced a fulm beyond the door.
"You can, if you want."
Mharwyb's jacket drops to the floor. Her hands lift to the first button of her shirt, and Thancred's eyes dart away from her.
"That's..." he says, "an atrocious idea. No offense."
"I missed you," Mharwyb replies.
"Mharwyb..."
"You can."
"Clearly I can," Thancred says, "—but I do not want to."
"Oh." Mharwyb drops her fingers, and Thancred permits his eyes to return to her. "Really?"
Thancred snorts. "Yes, really."

"Why not?"
"Because I am happy," Thancred answers. "I'm happy with this." He says, "I don't want to ruin this, with you nor with Moenlorh. This is enough for me.
More, even."
Mharwyb stares at him. She says, blankly, "...But you're in love with me."
Thancred gives a sharp half-laugh again. "Yes," he says. "I suppose so. All the more reason to keep myself restrained. I've a habit of ruining things, you know. Wouldn't do to upset you ever, but particularly now that I've met your father."
"I thought you had a nice time."
"I did have a nice time."
"I had a nice time," Mharwyb says, simply.
"Aye, Mharwyb," Thancred confirms, "so let's call it there.
"
