One thing that really struck me during my book research is just how many big contentious topics of British politics (the voting system, Brexit, the organisation of the armed forces, social cohesion) ultimately lead back to one topic that still gets far too little attention:the future of the union.

The UK would make a great republic. Regions, and Wales, Scotland being the countries they already see themselves as, the admin capital moves to Birmingham, using the NEC as Westminster is renovated to a tourist destination (already contains enough pubs), bringing half of MP closer to constituencies.

I keep saying we should break England back up into, say, seven smaller units based on some version of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms. Might need eight rather than seven and historic boundaries probably make some too big (Mercia?) or small (Kent?). Put them all on an even footing in a coherent structure.

Basically, it’s all there already … just send the Lords and Ladies home and re-open as a representational federal chamber (like German Bundesrat). Keep the Monarchie, but just for the tourists.
