Can we stop saying "non-binary people are valid" please. "Non-binary people are non-binary" is the equivalent. Every time this is said at an event or by an org I and many of the other non-binary people I know cringe and feel immediately uncomfortable. People have been saying this for years.

I no longer say anyone is valid. If I'm talking about nonbinary people, I say "nonbinary people are who they say they are." If I wanted 'validity,' I would have adapted to cisness.

I was guilty of this thinking it was fine until someone asked how I'd feel if instead of saying "trans women are women" they changed it to "trans women are valid" and yeah, I stopped doing it after that

I'm a binary trans woman so my opinion isn't suoer valid but I always felt the same way. Like...why do we need to change the pattern? "Nonbinary people are nonbinary" is easy, straightforward and accurate. Going a different direction feels somehow insincere.

I feel that our language fails us. This is no different than black lives matter. In both cases someone is trying to point out an inequity that shouldn't exist. When people say all lives matter (or are valid) this is a true statement, but is used as an excuse to maintain the unequal status quo.

I'm always confused about how we got to this place where "valid" is considered a good and normal thing to call someone. It always feels really condescending to me.

This is literally the only time I will post about this, but given I spend so much of my time fighting for this community I think I can say a small piece about how it continues to make me and other non-binary people feel unwelcome with language that is supposed to represent solidarity.

I don't really like either. Non-binary people are non-binary feels too close to 'brexit means brexit'. I'm fine with 'non-binary people exist'. Not exactly a rallying cry but I prefer it to the other two.
