Jay Bhattacharya just sent a letter to all NIH staff, amidst the Musk/Trump chaos, and we have it for you! We unpack Bhattacharya's 'anti-vax grifterese' (h/t @angierasmussen.bsky.social ) and point out what he is really saying. You'll want to click and zoom in on this one.

Subject: From the NIH Director: Honored to Lead NIH
Dear Colleagues:
As I begin my tenure as the 1gth Director of the National Institutes of Health, I want to first express my appreciation for all of you — the NIH scientists and staff whose work has contributed to lifesaving breakthroughs in biology and medicine. I most recently worked at Stanford University where my research in health economics was made possible with NIH support. I am honored and humbled to lead this agency and join you in service of the American people.
As a doctor, economist, and (now now former professor at stanto Unersity, I have always been driven by a passion for improving public health and
fostering an environment where scientific inquiry can flourish. Throughout my career, I have been supported by NIH, an institution that I love.
False: he has degraded scientific inquiry, pushing a pro-billionaire privatization agenda.
NIH's mission to enhance health remains vital as millions of children and adults in this country face poor outcomes due to chronic diseases like obesity, heart disease, and cancer. We must build on the agency's track record of tackling complex challenges and recommit to our mission to addressing the chronic disease crisis. While basic research will continue to lay the groundwork for future discoveries, we will invest in innovative, cutting-edge research that has the power to transform health. Importantly, our discoveries will only make an impact if the public has confidence in our findings and trusts that we are working in their best interests.
To help us achieve these goals, I have Establared it tonomig is lo prones, ignore real science/medicine
1. Focus on Improving Population Health: The work of NIH, whether basic or applied, must address the health need…

Got it and skimmed it, and I just couldn’t get past “improving population health.”

I think the operative phrase here is “chronic disease crises hampering the well-being of countless Americans“. Countless? Meaning they can’t be counted? How do you lead the NIH, while denying the basic ability of public health professionals to quantify public health crises?

I saw in the Federal Register that they are having some closed meetings for NIH soon. Not sure if anyone that actually cares about science can get invited into those.

Thanks to #AltNIH for clarification on the letter sent by yet another minion in the fascist coup.

Bhattacharya threw his Hippocratic Oath right into the burn pile.

Wow. Took him a whole week to write that garbage?

Here's the key points. When he says "chronic disease", read "anti-vax, ignore real science and medicine". When he says "Reproducibility", read "use issues in some fields as an excuse to tear down science"

Also note that he signed with a nickname, which we were just told a couple weeks ago violates HHS IT policies, so we must always use our full legal names 🤔

I don’t understand. He directs an agency that just terminated clinical trials where people were in the middle of treatment. How does that promote research ethics or participant safety? It does the opposite.
