a page from Fifth Province, the comic i made for the ignatz-nominated HOME anthology back in 2022 198x.love/saint%20vagr...

a living dialogue between the borderless space of past and present, grief and resolution— and recovery.

six panels in succession of a trans butch taking off his jacket, turning it inside out, and then putting it back on again, looking back over his shoulder in the final panel. this is one way to ward off fairies and escape from disappearing into the other world. here too a metaphor for the pitfalls of the past and aching homesickness, bottomlessness, undernourished. instead acknowledging it, walking alongside it, neither separate nor captive.

giorgios seferis wrote in Return of the Exile,

‘My old friend, stop a moment and think:
you’ll get used to it little by little.
Your nostalgia has created
a non-existent country, with laws
alien to earth and man.’

the panels are laid over a larger illustration. a green-blue sky with brilliant red clouds above the gentle rise of Cuilcagh and much of the peatland in their shadows. as well chalk outlines of horses running below, and flying geese.
