I’m sure this guy is great, not the point, but to think the solution to Canadian scoence is to attract a few dozen scientists from abroad is complete nonsense. There are just as good scientists here. I’m guessing here but my instincts tell me we were likely unable to compete against the opportunities in the states based on money alone which may (I repeat I’m guessing) have discouraged the investment/interest/fund raising 🫤 With good governance as a new competitive factor we may see all kinds

100% agree. The media doesn’t give a 💩 that tri-council will likely be decimated by the impending budget or that we consistently underfund all research in Canada. Nevermind how does 5-10 people going to Toronto somehow mean we stopped the brain drain??

I expect it would also be incredibly easy to recruit back Canadian researchers living abroad, which might be preferable to “headhunting US research stars.”

At least the piece does highlight the letter asking for a historic investment in tri-council funding and the great rate of return on investments in research funding
