Thanks for highlighting this letter. I cant believe we are about to witness the death/s of hunger strikers in this supposedly civilised country. Apart from the tragic loss of lives, what will the effect be on politics and public opinion?

Good response back from my MP: He’s signed two Early day motions : ref: 2386 & 2573 Plus a letter together with 50 MPs urging Sec of State for justice to meet with the solicitors of the hunger strikers. Written with 50 MPs & peers to Lammy. Written again to Sec of State & continuing to lobby.

Putting aside the humanity (as Lammy so often does), you can see this political own-goal unfurling from space! While the story has been underreported until now, as soon as someone dies, it will become an enormous club for the other parties to beat them around the head with! And they deserve it!

Remand is for people who represent a serious danger to the public. They should not be on Remand. They should be on bail.

I wrote to my MP (Damien Egan, Labour, Bristol NE) to protest at government treatment of the hunger strikers and the reply I got seemed to say that it was up to "the independent judiciary", nothing to do with the government. I'll have a look and get back to him.

"The Process Is the Punishment" (Malcolm Feeley) no matter what happens in court, the time on remand is punishment. it's a subtle aspect of successive governments' authoritarian attitude, kept in place, I suspect, by grey eminences within the machinery
