Could we please stop pretending that the flags being hung from streetlamps or painted on roundabouts are innocent expressions of patriotic pride? This is the far right marking out its territory. It uses these flags to intimidate its traditional victims and opponents. 🧵1/3

The answer should be very clear. You can fly whatever flag you want on property you own. Attaching them to or painting them on anything you don't own is vandalism. We have people in jail for doing these things and called terrorists so the law needs to be applied equally.

A "plausible deniability" trap the far right laid for them: tricky to condemn intimidation without looking unpatriotic. Especially effective as at other times, e.g. supporting the Lionesses, the flags are fine. But they're top politicians! Should be able to dodge - not that the media is helping.

I wrote to our local council to ask about safety, insurance etc and to ask what the rules are if I want to attach my own flags. Got a reply to say that they are awaiting a decision. So I made a counter proposal to our MP to fly flags of local not for profit community organisations instead!

Terribly disappointed in the lack of character and judgment from the government. I was in Faversham on the weekend and caught the tail end of their grubby little march. These people aren’t fit to dry-clean a union flag or St George’s cross. They need to be called out by every decent politician.
