1. Researching my latest column, I was astonished to stumble across this. Sarah Langford presents herself as a guardian of the countryside and champion of rural people and their culture. Yet it’s hard to imagine anything more damaging to rural people than “living between” two homes. 🧵

She now lives between Southwest London and Suffolk.

I took her book out from the library recently. I also watched quite a few videos of hers. I have nothing against her, but she seems to be part of this new breed of fancy farmers, who do it as a hobby, because they’re wealthy enough to do so. We then get charged £4 for regenerative sourdough. 🤷🏽‍♂️

She is married to "Baby" Gummer, once an MP. Well known farming family and Tory politicians on Ipswich Coast. Doubtful if they "bought a second home" as such. More like Cummings in Yorkshire.

This is everywhere in this country. It’s basically the same problem as people thinking that nature = fields of wheat and hedgerows, because they’re nice to look at, and they are so because of our innate attraction to order, it’s my best guess. 300 years of “landscape” art is probably also to blame.

In Norfolk they are called the green welly brigade. Londoners spending their weekends somewhere between the Burnhams and Holt. Doing it for decades. And others ask why there is a housing shortage for locals. It's not caravans or cabins, but full sized 3 or 4 bed houses.

2. Now this is quite personal for me, as when Regenesis, my deeply-researched attempt to work out how everyone might best be fed without devouring the planet, was published, Langford launched a fierce but entirely unfounded attack on me, on the grounds that I was harming rural people.

I do get this, and there is something particularly infuriating about the establishment hypocrite, but I am reluctant to criticise people for needing to move about. A fulfilling green lifestyle does not preclude travel. Needing two places to stay may just be better than driving 20000 miles a year.
