George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 29/04/20251. This is a thread about why Food Waste is so often, and wrongly, identified as the major problem with the food system. Yes, it's an issue, but in the rich world, it's far smaller than many others. It’s massively over-emphasised, while other, far more important problems, are ignored and avoided. 🧵 19724210
George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 29/04/20252. In the UK, almost all the “pre-consumer” food waste that can realistically be used is already brought back into the system by initiatives such as FareShare. What remains is largely “post-consumer”. If you want to root through people's bins, be my guest. But you might not find many takers. 71315
Youngy @mancversusfood.bsky.social · 29/04/2025Hey George, this is my area of work and I think this point grossly under estimates waste in manufacturing and over estimates the amount collected by redistribution organisations 000
Veronica P @vronr.bsky.social · 29/04/2025FareShare only takes a fraction of the corporate waste food. I volunteer there so I know the facts. 010
My Overqwil is Amazing @ademainalors.bsky.social · 29/04/2025And there's the key word, the UK. In the United States we have a massive problem with pre-consumer food waste. 100
🚥Perrywong🚥 @perrywong.bsky.social · 29/04/2025When I worked in a Supermarket, in the mid 00s, we filled a skip, the size of a Winnebago, with wasted food, every single week. I hope things have improved, since. 000
Stephen Lowe Watson @stephenlowewatson.bsky.social · 29/04/2025Normal people don't root through others' bins, but Michael Gove was never a normal person www.channel4.com/programmes/a...channel4.comA Stab in the Dark - Episode 1From 1992. Michael Gove roots through celebrities' bins to check their green credentials. 030
George Monbiot @georgemonbiot.bsky.social · 29/04/20253. As anyone familiar with my writing knows, I'm not hostile to moral suasion. But I recognise it as a weak and limited tool. No one means to buy more food than they’ll eat, and telling people, like naughty children, “your eyes are bigger than your stomach” is likely to be especially unproductive. 11475
Laura Clemens @lauraclemens.bsky.social · 29/04/2025My household was part of a big study I agreed to be part of and they did actually collect my bin and sort through it 010
