One is that the US only makes up a fraction of the planet. This means that while we are experiencing extreme cold, other places could be experiencing extreme heat, or at least warmer than average conditions. This is what the figure in this post shows: global temperature anomalies.

An anomaly is a departure from normal. Essentially, we can ask, “How much does this temperature differ from what we would expect on this day in January?” Here, any purples and blues show temperatures below normal, while greens, yellows, and reds show above normal.

The US and much of Russia are under deep purples, indicating that these regions are much colder than normal. However, most of the Earth is covered by greens, yellows, and reds, showing that while some places are colder, temperatures are still higher at a global level.
