Giles Wilkes @gilesyb.bsky.social · 25/06/2026The absolute dead giveaway that you're dealing with a third rate economic mind is if they elevate policy towards North Sea licences towards the top of their agenda. On either side of the question. It shows they're incapable of doing basic calculations of significance. 1117341
Dan Grey @dangrey.bsky.social · 26/06/2026I'm a bit confused about the "on either side of the question" part. It is vital that we keep the hundreds of millions of tonnes of carbon still beneath the continental shelf exactly where it is. If we don't, we can't encourage other countries to do the same, and we *need* that to happen.Dan Grey@dangrey.bsky.socialThe remaining carbon budgets do not make good reading. Remembering that annual fossil fuel CO₂ emissions are 39 Gt a year, the remaining budget for (for an 83% chance of) keeping global temperatures below +1.5° are 30 Gt, for +1.7° 300 Gt, and below +2° 690 Gt. 161
Michael @michaeljsc.bsky.social · 26/06/2026not sure how closely you followed the Holyrood election but the amount of attention the media gave this issue was insaneMichael@michaeljsc.bsky.socialcan tell it’s going to annoy me how much time is spent on North Sea oil and gas in this election despite the issue being (a) not nearly as important as most people are making out and (b) entirely reserved to Westminster 010
Simon Wyatt 🇺🇦 @drsimonwyatt.bsky.social · 26/06/2026It should be an absolute slam dunk bottom of the agenda item. Not controversial to want to keep fossil fuels in the ground, do everything you can to drive up prices so people choose to reduce consumption 000
RunnerWild @narrowboatade.bsky.social · 25/06/2026You're wrong. Private enterprise will extract the oil at a loss and also give the oil to Kemi Badenough. She will sell the oil to Vladistock Putinesca and Britain will reap trillions and immediately deport anyone with a French relation. 000
Alan Fresco @alanf.bsky.social · 25/06/2026It's tiresome, yes. Unfortunately politicians seem to have decided to turn it into a political argument full of adjectives but notably lacking in numbers. If only one of them just said it doesn't make that much difference one way or the other. 000
Peter Randall @thesolarking.bsky.social · 27/06/2026We are not talking enough about what should be in place to the equivalent EU Just Transition Fund. Right now we need to see more investment to create jobs for those who won't find employment in Green growth areas & be targeted at NE Scotland plus it's hinterland. O&G industry should be paying for it 100
Zoe Avison @zoeavison.bsky.social · 26/06/2026Pretty alarming to read that this thinking extends to HMT www.telegraph.co.uk/business/202...telegraph.co.ukMiliband derailed plan to use North Sea oil to fund defenceEnergy Secretary ‘vetoed’ plan to pay for military programmes by increasing drilling 000
Giles Wilkes @gilesyb.bsky.social · 25/06/2026And this is especially so if they grudgingly acknowledge that it doesn't affect UK energy prices, and instead start wibbling weakly about tax revenues 2410
Jack London @jacklondonbluesky.bsky.social · 27/06/2026Agreed - but there are many other signs of "a third rate economic mind" 000
Andrew Thomson @quantinghome.bsky.social · 25/06/2026It's bonkers. We've extracted 48 billion barrels and now, after 25 years of declining output we're arguing about whether to extract another 3 billion or (optimistically) 7 billion. 010
Borners @borners.bsky.social · 25/06/20261. Its gonna be a "Brown sold off the gold" meme. 2. Classic stupidity to fall into it on the part of Labour, your net zero goal is to make oil irrelevant. Overestimating Net-Zero consensus (see Canada Carbon tax). 150
