JudithFlanders @judithflanders.co.uk · 09/11/2025I’m no statistician, but if you buy your first house in your 30s on a 50-year mortgage, and life expectancy is low 80s, isn’t this just called — rent?Kai Ryssdal@kairyssdal.bsky.socialDo the math. It don’t add up 2640975
Mity Cheese @mitycheese.bsky.social · 09/11/2025Yes, but you're renting from your own grandkids, who will inherit the house. 010
pattygann.bsky.social @pattygann.bsky.social · 09/11/2025No because you’re building equity, you can always pay more on the principal every month, and your mortgage payment is stable, unlike paying rent where you have no ownership no matter how many years you live in one place. 280
Mark Something @ohdarkthirty.bsky.social · 09/11/2025What could be better than renting AND paying property taxes? 000
Knownames🇨🇦 @knownames.bsky.social · 09/11/2025I find it crazy there are so many people that have no idea what equity is. Have you ever tried putting a house you rent in your will to your children? Have you ever sold a rented house for a profit? The ignorance on this feed is staggering. 020
-indy ✨ (he/him) @indigo-k.com · 09/11/2025Yeah, I can't see how any bank would offer a 50-year mortgage to someone who's in the 40s or 50s. 000
Chs Yank @chsyank.bsky.social · 09/11/2025I have to say it would allow more people to buy. Buying means that you can do whatever with the house, unlike Trump who only rents the house. Selling the house, hopefully at a profit and then buy again is OK. You will never earn a profit renting! 120
Mike Wilson anonymous low-level loser @mkwilson27.bsky.social · 09/11/2025No, because you build equity and your payments decrease over time — in real terms. 000
bob @huntthesnark.bsky.social · 09/11/2025Not exactly. Some portion of your payment goes into equity, and if the market price of your home appreciates, then as the equity holder, you receive the benefit of that as well. Sure, you're making a monthly payment basically for the rest of your life, but at the end you have accumulated a lot. 010
DCM Tennis @dcmtennis.bsky.social · 09/11/2025Rent but with 50 years of interest and 50 years of maintenance costs. 110
strange american @jamesjamerson1.bsky.social · 09/11/2025But your ren— I mean, uh, mortgage - is way lower now! You will just never ever pay it off but don’t worry about that 000
Kerri @hughdidthisagain.bsky.social · 09/11/2025And then you reverse mortgage it back to the bank and they own it again. 000
The TERROR @jackshawhan.bsky.social · 09/11/2025A shittier rent where you have no expectation that parts of repair and inspection and insurance will be taken care of by a landlord, or ability to leave because of this. More like a satanic pact with the worlds worst slumlord. 000
Philip Aubin 🇨🇦 - Slava 🇺🇦 @philipaubin.bsky.social · 12/11/2025bsky.app/profile/phil...Philip Aubin 🇨🇦 - Slava 🇺🇦@philipaubin.bsky.socialDoesn't it bother Americans that Canadians have a #lifeexpectancy that is 5 years longer? Of course to live longer they'd have to adopt some democratic socialist policies. 000
Jane Thurber @thurberteam.bsky.social · 09/11/2025Maybe, but just as some people take out a car loan pr lease to spread out/ manage costs, it could work if you can get better/ different housing for similar costs. Lack of rental housing in an area near your work or a child's school. 000
Treyf Posting 🤌 @postingtreyf.bsky.social · 09/11/2025The average age of a first time home buyer is now 40. 000
miasorada.bsky.social @miasorada.bsky.social · 09/11/2025No, the owner is still building equity albeit slower than with a 30-yr mortgage. What a 50-yr fixed rate mortgage does is offer a different financial product for derivatives market to bundle and trade on. The 50-yr product seems like it would be more stable than 30-yr but introduces other 120
Oh-Phuck @zerophcksgiven.bsky.social · 09/11/2025it's not for you. its for the investor class that now can't pay mortgage because renters can't afford. SO they now get relief by lowering mortgage monthly thus lowering rent and Minimum Wage stays the same. 000

J.sweetandspicy @wasimmigrant1905.bsky.social · 09/11/2025Not if you consider inherited wealth. Also, I’d rather have the bank as my landlord than the shitty ass landlords I’ve had. Other than that, point well taken. 050
