As news dribbles out of Russia, such as shopping malls in Moscow becoming ghost towns, keep in mind that Moscow and St. Petersburg are favored show cities. Things are falling apart in the big cities, and conditions in the rest of the country are far, far worse.

True, but for what my Russian contacts tell me, at least in Saint Petersburg (and I assume also in Moscow) the feeling is very far from panic yet. Of course you can discount that as a relatively small pool of data (I believe what they tell me, no Putin sympathisers) but still makes me wonder

If they would count to some type of middle class, things shouldnt be too obvious yet. Or percieved as "well manageable". That may change. Slowly, then faster.

They will do everything they can to keep things operating like normal but another year of UA drone strikes and deficit spending will change things. They are slowly backing up to a cliff but they don't see the cliff yet. The longer they overextend in Ukraine the worse it will become.
