There are, however , plenty ‘either way’ non indictable/ indictable offences that could stay in the Magistrate’s court & not be permitted to join the long queue for Crown Court.

You are right of course but it's only a few weeks ago all of you seemed completely fine with the opposite. And terrorism charges are still being added after the jury convicts on civl disobedience.

That matters because a jury puts the state’s case in front of ordinary citizens, not just officials—a check on concentrated power that speedier courts cannot replace.

Good News next Burnham could free up some of the court backlog by repealing the Starmer protest legislation that has seen 1000,s arrested and charged with terrorist offences for holding signs supporting Palestine. They are not terrorists and juries are unwilling to convict them.

We all want to see swifter justice and backlogs cleared up, but it should never have been at the expense of reducing jury trials and risking injustices. I welcome this announcement today.
