Good news for London’s leaseholders ⤵️ I welcome the government’s introduction of a cap on ground rent. For too long, Londoners have had to struggle with unregulated and unaffordable ground rent charges.

They should also have included a maximum rate rise at inflation; the £250 cap will soon become the minimum as well, a huge rise for those fortunate enough to have a peppercorn ground rent.

The remember (1980s) where ground rents were subjected to the rent act, with max limits over the whole term of the lease. One flat we were interested in had the ground rent doubling every 10 years, which soon took it outside if the rent act… and was illegal. ( we eventually bought the freehold :)

Ireland abolished ground rents in 1978. It can be done.
