I posted this to our more than 750,000 followers across Meta's platforms today. We can't abandon our community there, but we are so glad to add Bluesky and other platforms as they come along. Thank you for being here, wherever we may be. 🫶😻

Pixel, a gray and black Cornish Rex cat, and Sophie, a solid white Cornish Rex cat with blue eyes, sit in a fuzzy gray bed looking at the camera. Pixel sports a silly grin while Sophie gives her signature "side eye."

The text reads: Friends, this is a long read, so strap in. So much has happened the last few days that people are finding their heads spinning trying to keep up, myself included. After some thought, I have a couple of things that I want to say about Meta's announcement to roll back the content policies that have helped keep their platforms safer, more inviting spaces in the past few years. Indeed, I've seen evidence just this morning that the changes have already taken place.

First of all, I have never allowed hatred and toxicity to proliferate in my comment sections, and I never will. Just because Markie Z. has decided to allow hate speech on his platforms does not mean that it will be tolerated even one iota within the digital spaces that I have control over. We all know that spammers, bots, and trolls have always been largely left for page owners and content creators to deal with anyway — so I will just put in a little overtime in that regard. 🤷‍♀️

There is no doubt that you've seen everyone talking about leaving, and admittedly, it sounds a bit tempting doesn't it? However, while I have set up accounts for Club Meatbird on most of the alternative platforms that have been springing up — I will not be leaving Meta, and I have several reasons for making that decision.

Of course, this is my job and how we have gotten by for the past few years, but more than that, the community that we have built here is invaluable to me.

We are social animals as human beings, no matter how much our egos fight to convince us that we can survive as islands. We need our communities and our social connections in order to maintain our mental health and well-being. And while it is tempting to say "oh just go to another platform" or "get off social media and go outside," these approaches fall short of recognizing the ways in which "community" has taken on new definitions in recent years.

People who are disabled and homebound, for example, may rely on the social connections that these platforms and the communities that we've spent years building here provide. Others may have jobs that mean they have to sneak small moments of social enrichment into busy schedules. Further, going out to socialize in person can be cost prohibitive for many. And finally, some of us have simply grown to prefer interacting with others in online spaces — and there is nothing wrong with that.

Our existing communities and connections are valuable. They give us strength and hope, which in turn empowers us as individuals. Giving them up at a time like this will only further isolate people, and could be why we are seeing this sudden about-face in policy here, coupled with the proliferation of AI bots and other undesirable features — no one ever intended to give us space to create anything this powerful, and now certain parties want these communities dismantled.

Convincing us to give them up of our own volition is 100% the easiest way to do so. Broken people who have lost their sources of strength, hope, and camaraderie are going to be the easiest to manipulate with rage bait and misinformation.

On the other hand, I also see this as tangible, undeniable proof of the POWER of our communities, and I think you should too.

I saw that post on FarceBork and it helped me find you here on BlueSky. My opinion is similar to yours. I'm not abandoning Meta platforms just yet, but I /am/ branching out just in case leaving Meta becomes inevitable.

Glad to see ya'll here! I couldn't keep posting on Meta after all that went down; it seems like we're all getting herded into different directions these days but bluesky has been nice...so far lol.
