#KawaseHasui (1883-1957) Ochanomizu 1926 Twenty views of Tokyo Series #japanese #woodblock Every snowscape by Hasui has snowflakes rendered in unique ways. Here the flakes are ovoid and slanted, and their tones range from brilliant white to soft grey.

A blizzard transforms an ordinary view into an extraordinary one, with blowing gusts of snow contrasted with the dark grey swath of the riverbank, and a bright yellow window light providing bursts of color. The view from the bridge over the Ochanomizu, a tributary of the Kanda River: a boat has come to a halt in the squalls during a blizzard, a row of houses is situated on the opposite bank.”

So delicately rendered. Stunning.

When we compare this to what was just released by OpenAI - how can we even begin to compare? This is truly, humanly beautiful. The Japanese snow scenes are probably my favourite genres of Japanese art.
