I keep getting stuck on 'I traumatized a brilliant person" instead of like "I committed a heinous act". It's got a real "sorry you were offended" vibe to me. 10 years to allegedly ruminate about it and that's what you come up with?

I think trauma is recognizably (to him and us) weightier than offense, and that the greatest regret of his life that he thinks about every day being Heinous goes without saying, and the nature of the damage one's undoable actions have tangibly caused to another is a pretty natural grain for the perpetrator's conception of the act to crystallize around if they're capable of remorse and empathy, and this is a pretty to-the-point summation of how one would feel in the position he's in.

Given that the victim hadn't given permission to speak in great detail about the incident publicly, I don't know what kind of more elaborate statement I would expect him to have prepared to drop as soon as this came to light. A few more specific examples of how he's wielded the pain as a driver for reparations? More self-flagellation?

Noting that I don't know what if anything I've ever watched from him, I'm just seeing Takes about The Incident and nuanced discussions away from Bluesky that approach this from the perspective of supporting rehabilitation on principle, which is something I generally align with, since the harm caused by disincentivizing/neglecting to reward human growth in favor of locking people away as though past mistakes render them inherently permanently irredeemable and the best we can do if we can't just kill them is tax fund physical and psychological torture upon them indefinitely is something we're forced to bear witness to all the time.

thinking about a bit more (as someone who hasn't seen this guy's work either, I don't think), I'd say a better statement would simply be something like "sorry, I am donating X amount of money to these orgs, you will never hear from me again" and then just live a life outside of being a pub figure
