Physicist David Mermin was born #OTD in 1935. He made contributions to condensed matter physics and quantum mechanics, coined the phrase "shut up and calculate," and is a prolific writer of and about science. My favorite sly Merminisms are these index entries from his Solid State textbook. 🧪 ⚛️

He gave a great talk at UC Santa Cruz about the Sokal affair while I was a grad student there. I knew who he was because we'd used Ashcroft & Mermin as the textbook for our Solid State Physics course! I did not know that he coined "shut up and calculate"; will get my attributions right in future!
