A little known fact: de Sitter was actually a time traveller who also became somewhat famous under the pseudonym of Robert Langlands

In 1917, a few years after general relativity, Einstein turned his attention to cosmology. A static universe, where things stayed more or less the same over time, seemed self-evident. But he couldn’t get it to work. GR seemed to describe dynamic universes that must expand or contract. (2/n)
