x-posting this thread i made from twitter so I have it here too: BTS as work from my favourite Canadian female artists. Why? Great question. No idea. Here we are! Most of these are 20th century, and are extremely subjective--this is not a list of the best artists or anything!

Kim Namjoon - Annie Pootoogook's Bringing Home Food (2003-4)

Kim Namjoon from Indigo album promotions

Annie Pootoogook's Bringing Home Food. It is a coloured pencil drawing a household, presumably in Kinngait, where she lived. Two men are carrying in a seal, and a woman follows with a box of groceries.

Annie Pootoogook was an Inuit artist who made a lot of art about the intersections of modern and traditional life that I think Namjoon would really like. This piece is exactly what it says: the subjects are carrying home both a seal and a box from the grocery story. She used accessible mediums and forms, but her art carries a lot of complex ideas about culture and colonialism and the humanity of her subjects in a way that I really love, and I think Namjoon would too! Also her style in general gives me the same vibe as mono, in a way—simple in form but rich in content.
