"Why do people think you hate Gundam when there’s only been like… two Gundam things you’ve actually hated contrasted to the ones you’ve seen and liked (G, X, Wing, 00, F91, 0079, 0080)" alterspring.org/@runlikemelo...

This question was asked in good faith so I'll do my best to explain. It's hard because I always fear coming off as a pretentious asshole when explaining this even though it is my genuine opinion and not any kind of posturing.

To be fair, I reject the label of "Gundam fan." I do like all the entries you listed (and 08th MS Team!) but with one or two exceptions I believe what makes them good is that they are actively rejecting what it is that defines a Gundam work, and trying to carve out something new.

It is the institution of Gundam that I detest, and that institution was set in stone the day Zeta Gundam made it to air. Rehashing the same characters, the same conflicts, the same plots ad nauseum until they don't mean anything. An echo-chamber. A self-licking ice cream cone. And most of those works listed that I do like were cognizant of this fact and actively sought out to break that cycle.

But I do think that cycle won out in the end regardless. People can insist all they want that this new video game/anime hybrid about killing aliens "isn't Gundam," but I do think it's the logical endpoint to the identity Bandai has fostered over the decades.

This idea that the past can never die in this franchise and has to be repeated endlessly is one of the reasons why I have made it three episodes into Seed Destiny and lost all drive to continue. SEED sucks for a multitude of reasons but at least it sort of had its own attempt at an identity.

Okay I do not mean this to be rude I promise and I hope it doesn’t come off as such but I do have to say I cannot comprehend entirely how you say zeta to the most recent alien conflict is a logical endpoint in ur mind. Like I totally understand the criticism ur giving as much as I love zeta and

People really need to like fucking understand that you are some random person on the internet and that they really shouldn't hold yours(or frankly anyone's) opinion in such a high regard as to warrant how they harass you.

I've only seen G Gundam and 00 so I wanted to ask what exactly is the cycle of gundam?

I noticed that list of ones you liked doesn't include Turn A Gundam. I don't know if the asker just forgot but on the off-chance you haven't watched it, I think it would be right up your alley

i have elected not to comment on the zeta slander to say i agree that gundam is pretty much a ghost of its former self. the hathaway movies is pretty much the only ongoing gundam project worth a damn

(somewhat of a tangent off of this point, apologies) Very interesting observations, I think it's non-Tomino UC where the line is crossed for me, with Zeta, Hathaway etc pairing the idea of Sequel with 'the ghost of the past will drag us down with it lest we succeed in breaking free'

I think at a certain point when you see this franchise going out of its way to rehire the abuser for cute little cameos you just need to cut your losses and move on.
