Elizabeth Nelson @paranoiacs.bsky.social · 07/04/2026Happy birthday to the incomparable Merle Haggard, whose wide screen storytelling, staggering eye for poignant detail and working class anthems comprise perhaps the finest American Songbook of all. Here's an essay I wrote about him for Stereogum a handful of years back. stereogum.com/1870888/the-... 67911
fred-decker.bsky.social @fred-decker.bsky.social · 07/04/2026I was pretty dismissive of country music as a youngster (my Mom's music!), aside from a few icons like Cash and Parton. But then a group of punk musicians I liked put out a side project called The Knitters, and covered Silver Wings. So that led me to Haggard, and he's...all the things country / 120

Rick Kronberg @rickskron.bsky.social · 07/04/2026One of the best to ever do it. Here’s a spectacular Hag song from 2000. youtu.be/kIifEEM1sTk?...youtu.beMerle Haggard - "Wishing All These Old Things Were New" (Full Album Stream)YouTube video by ANTI- Records 032
Mark van Roojen @markvr1.bsky.social · 07/04/2026Thanks for this! Lucky enough to see him near the end of 2015 in a very good show, not long before his death. Guy could write a song when he wanted to. I think he once said he wrote "Okie" as a kind of joke. Surely the line about marijuana was a bit ironic coming from him, if I gather correctly. 010
