1 of 5 #scotsfoundedfootball David Bruce @dab13rp.bsky.social set me thinking with his intelligent probing of my analyses. I cannot stress this enough. History is not the collection of facts. It is the analysis and contextualisation of said facts. Bring two seemingly disparate facts together.

2 of 5 An example: Iain Campbell Whittle’s comments about the Burnbank and West of Scotland pitches. Before the tenements, Burnbank ran almost from St. George’s Cross up to the River Kelvin. It was flat and could contain any size of pitch you wanted. This was crucial, in the early days.

Burnbank Sports Ground on the south side of the Great Western Road. Picture probably from the early 1870s. Note how flat the ground is. The church on the right hand side is Saint Mary's Episcopal Cathedral on the corner of Napiershall Street. The spire is over 450 yards away and where the hut in the middle ground is, is 150 yards wide. This is the narrowest extent of the space. A 200 x 100 yard pitch could have been easily accommodated, with plenty of space for spectators.
