Seeing a lot of discussion about life as a creative after age 30, and I can say with confidence that I didn't truly find myself as a writer until a few years ago, after age 40. I couldn't have tackled what I'm writing now at a younger age--I wasn't ready.

I hit my stride in my fifties, and got out two books (story collection and memoir) in my seventies, a lit mag publication at 81 and I'm shopping a novel around as I look at 83. As Richard Pryor said, "You don't get old bein' no fool."

As a fantasy writer, I often struggled in my earlier works with writing authentic human characters and meaningful relationships that didn’t feel cardboard. I suppose it’s a lack of prerequisite experiences that can render us blind in our works. I do find that as I get older, the quality improves.

Big same. When I got back into art at 42, there was something to my approach, motivation and mindset that wasn’t there in my 20s or 30s. While it sucked to be coming into it this late, I also have experiences, wisdom and resources that weren’t available or ready back then. Grateful for all of it.

I didn't break into top-call/union-level gigs until age 39. It took 15 years of grinding and networking to get there. There are musical concepts I studied in grad school that I am --just--starting to really wrap my head around and it's been 20 years. Sonny Rollins is in his 90's and still practices.

Thank you for highlighting this fact. For years I’d kicked myself for not attempting writing earlier in life, but recently I’ve realized that I have many more meaningful things to say now, as I would have then. So I’m saying them now(51)
