The "safety" systems are mostly passive. it's a mile down, so they're using the weight of the water to keep everything belowground. Convection, heat goes up, etc.
Boron-doped coolant, pretty standard. The "failsafe" is their ARC system, which is a whole bunch of boron to squirt into the core.
