My gift to my other brother was a 28-page zine of Dennis the Menace cartoons with captions from The Far Side, inspired by the time a newspaper in Dayton repeatedly switched the captions for The Far Side and Dennis the Menace

Blue 5.5x8.5” zine with pink cover image of Far Side “Cow tools” cartoon but the cow has Dennis the Menace’s head. Title text: Dennis Tools

Cartoon: Dennis at the door holding a hose, pointing behind him at a kid washing a car, his mom looking on in distress

Caption: "Sally, this is Larry and his brother, Eddie.... Larry used to be an only child until the gardener hacked him in half."

Cartoon 1: Dennis in class whispering to classmate
Caption 1: “Now here comes the barbaric finale.”

Cartoon 2: Dennis at church with his parents talking to the priest
Caption 2: “Wow, this place is really packed—or maybe it’s just my compound eyes.”

Cartoon: Dennis looking at a globe with two other children
Caption: “Of course, long before you mature, most of you will be eaten.”

this is so good. this pair of swapped captions made child-me laugh maybe more than anything has since

far side comic featuring two caveman-style people in a cave. one is doing a crystal ball reading for the other. the caption, which is swapped from the other comic, reads “If I get as big as Dad, won’t my skin be too TIGHT?”

dennis the menace comic featuring the family at the dinner table. dennis is speaking to his mother. the caption, which is swapped from the other comic, reads “I see your little, petrified skull… labeled and resting on a shelf somewhere.”
