A lot of tech people seem to want to solve social problems through a purely technical lens. But, unfortunately, to solve social problems like “trust” and “safety,” you need to make judgements that aren’t purely technical. It requires choices about politics and society. There is no avoiding it.

As someone who's worked in tech as a designer and contractor for 20 years this is completely spot on. And every team I've ever been on where I try to solve a problem more holistically and not just through throwing code at it you get benched.

and the best time to have a policy about nazis is before the nazis arrive. the next best time to have it is immediately after. if you wait for the code to be complete before deciding how to handle nazis but let them onto the platform in the meantime it will be burned for a large group of people

every single user content platform eventually comes to the realization that they need to hire a lot of humans (or abuse free labor e.g. reddit) to do the shitty work of dealing with garbage humans. (or become entirely unusable)

Creating a successful federated protocol is cool — but it doesn’t ensure you’re on the side of democracy. Setting up a scalable moderation process is crucial — but it doesn’t mean you’re categorically opposed to fascism. These judgements are very hard and real, but unavoidable.
