The vcinfodocs domain was first registered Sep 9, 2024. Duran published the article leading to his book on July 22, 2024. Interesting timing. newrepublic.com/article/1839...

Where J.D. Vance Gets His Weird, Terrifying Techno-Authoritarian Ideas
Yes, Peter Thiel was the senator’s benefactor. But they’re both inspired by an obscure software developer who has some truly frightening thoughts about reordering society.

"Sam Altman tried to bribe me" wow. cool.

zota @zota.bsky.social · 12h
I can only imagine what a sleeze like Altman back in full Y Combinator scam mode would have to see in someone to make an offer. Terrifying. You must really understand it from the inside

zota @zota.bsky.social · 12h
Sam Altman offered you VC money? Damn. I guess you are an expert in Silicon Valley fascism.

You're the only one who keeps bringing that guy up. I'm more disappointed in your erasure of all the other scholars in this field, especially the women who were spelling it out clearly and not trying to cash a "reformed" VC check
100
zota @zota.bsky.social · 12h
Sounds like you didn't have a very clear idea about the structural nature of Silicon Valley fascism. That's fine. A lot of people were naive, trying to get a piece of the action.

zota @zota.bsky.social · 12h
What year did you finally pivot from trying to "do reform" of techno-fascist capital?

zota @zota.bsky.social · 12h
Virilio published Speed and Politics in 1977. Glad you eventually caught up, I guess? Try the War Machine chapter in A Thousand Plateaus. Might bring to mind the self-destructive exuberance of those heady, long-ago days... 12 years ago.

You're claiming to be the single foundational source on the subject of Silicon Valley and fascism, and demand that you be cited in all work on the subject going forward. It's not a "gotcha" to point out you're unaware of prior work of prominent scholars in the field. It's just a fact.

Yes, you've been very consistent in your structural critique of VC tech culture as a tool of fascism, oh wait hang on.... modelviewculture.com/pieces/five-...

I was invoking scholarship as scholarship. Specifically prior scholarship on technology and fascism, that was not acknowledged at all let alone cited. If you're going to claim you've made original, foundational contributions to a field, it would help to know about that field.

By you "work" do you mean your original writing? Or do you mean a website of collected citations to other published work? And everyone was talking about VCs taking over the government when the internet backbone was given to private businesses in 1995. Read Deleuze & Guattari, babe

zota @zota.bsky.social · 13h
Saying that you're better and sooner than a prominent scholar who published years before you and yet you're never heard of? An ass was gotten, but not mine
200
zota @zota.bsky.social · 13h
Well, not sooner, obviously. But you can't be expected to know about all the prior work in such a large field.

Wow, hundreds. Sounds like there's a huge body of prior work going back a very long time. How did your original writing and research distinguish itself from such a crowded field?
100
zota @zota.bsky.social · 13h
Ahh yeah. Bay Area Futurists have way less interesting style than the Italian originals. Pity.
000
zota @zota.bsky.social · 13h
You ran a magazine about the topic, but had no idea about some of the most prominent contemporanious work in the field. cool cool cool

zota @zota.bsky.social · 13h
I made a net art site in the 90's that parodied technofascist transhumanism — I guess you're plagiarizing me.
000
zota @zota.bsky.social · 13h
Are you accusing Kate Crawford of plagiarizing your work
200
zota @zota.bsky.social · 13h
Oh damn, you worked for Marinetti? I bet that guy smelled crazy
100
zota @zota.bsky.social · 13h
I'm not at all surprised that you're unaware of the large body of prominent research in this area. But if you're falsely claiming to have made original, foundational contributions while erasing the work of the women who came before you, maybe you should be more careful about your accusations?
100
zota @zota.bsky.social · 13h
When ATT put out their "You Will" campaign in the 90s, it was almost an over the top parody of aspirational dot-com fascism. Apple's Big Brother 1984 ad was released in... 1984! The fucking Futurists for fucks sake!
100
zota @zota.bsky.social · 13h
why don't you cite the prior work on this topic bsky.app/profile/zota...
100
zota @zota.bsky.social · 13h
The principle researcher at Microsoft gave a talk on this exact topic at SXSW in 2017. The website you're pointing to as the Stolen Work is a compilation of links to newspaper articles. None of this is a new field of research. Try asking "AI" about the history of fascism and technology.
100
zota @zota.bsky.social · 13h
You want me to carry on with pointing out your claims of plagiarism are self-evidently false?
000
zota @zota.bsky.social · 13h
If it's entirely different, that means it's not plagiarized.
100
zota @zota.bsky.social · 14h
"I disagree with this book's thesis" doesn't get the same engagement as a claim that the book is entirely stolen. Okay then!
110
zota @zota.bsky.social · 14h
If your concern isn't plagiarism, obsessively promoting someone's direct accusations of plagiarim is a weird way to show it
100
zota @zota.bsky.social · 14h
So none of this conversation is new, much of the research is decades old, Duran has a completely different thesis, and he makes a different point. So why are you promoting Shanley's claims to the contrary.

So the Dem is only the nominee because multiple funders though they could use her as a tool, and now they've pulled all funding, but with just a few weeks to go, you think that if the only funded/polled non-republician dropped out, she'd have a better than even chance? I mean, if you say so.
