1/2 Last thursday, we placed three light traps in the rocky subtidal ca 400 offshore @iolr-il.bsky.social, to collect demersal #plankton for heavy metal analysis. Yesterday we lost the GPS signal and couldn't find them...

New preprint out! Are jellyfish🪼 parasite 🪱 highways🚦? For years, we collected parasitic worms from gelatinous hosts in five seas and mapped their global records. Turns out gelatinous zooplankton have an important role in the life cycle of parasites, and vice versa: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

🦞🥬🥕🐸 An #invasive crayfish that clones itself, survives droughts, eats almost anything - even cannibalize its own juveniles! In fragile semi-arid habitats, this flexibility may be exactly what makes an invader so hard to stop. Check out our new #NeoBiota paper: neobiota.pensoft.net/article/1830...

🤔👾 What if the first sign of an invader is not something we see, but something we sequence? Check out our new paper, proposing MODAS (Molecularly Detected Alien Species) as a warning flag for #eDNA detections 👻🧬🚩 👉 tinyurl.com/49vm3cfu #eDNA-LEV @skatsanevakis.bsky.social @iolr-il.bsky.social

If you ever seen the seafloor after a seaweed bloom, it can get dark, and the mud might stink from decaying macroalgae. There are a lot of processes involved, mostly microbial. Nutrients have a surprising (to me) role in all of it. 🧪🌊 Link: pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1...

@zoopel.bsky.social just presented our MODAS concept at the #GuardIAS Conference: a database flag for alien species detected solely through molecular tools. By integrating these “invisible invaders” into IAS systems, we can prioritise validation, boost early warning, and modernise biosecurity. #eDNA

🦈🐳🌊 A giant visitor in Haifa! 1/2 For the second time in two weeks, a whale shark was spotted along the southeastern Mediterranean — a rare and exciting event! Whale sharks feed on zooplankton, especially sergestid shrimps, chaetognaths (arrow worms), and calanoid copepods 🦐🏹🪱 @iolr-il.bsky.social
