Probably hasn't actually been used in at least a decade even if it's nominally "active". Metro owns the ROW, shouldn't be a problem to decommission it but I'm just a rando so idk

It's one thing to be a big tent YIMBY, and it feels like an entirely different thing to give an open invitation to your factory to a guy who believes black people are genetically less intelligent.

Uncomfortably heavy tbh, especially when it’s loaded up like this. Buuuut it has a really heavy duty double sided kick stand that makes it difficult to tip over

Renting a Wombi e-bike for a month or two for funsies and I did a stress test with a big Costco run! The people who say “but how will I get my groceries without an SUV???” have zero imagination. #urbanism+ #bikesky #LA

Even if you are in the Valley, transit is a lot better than it gets credit for tbh. LA Metro's bus lines in the Valley have consistently had some of the highest post-COVID ridership returns/growth. It only recently had a decline bc of the ICE raids.

From the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council Newsletter, they oppose SB 79 (no surprise there), and also have a proposal for LA Metro that blends the technology of Sepulveda Transit Corridor Alternative 5, with the route of Alt 6. #LA #urbanism+
Planning & Land Use Committee + Vision Committee
Jeff Kalban, Chair
email: jeff.kalban.sonc@gmail.com

We're in a battle not just to preserve, but to enhance the quality of life in Sherman Oaks - and two major threats are bearing down on us.
1. Senate Bill 79 (SB 79):
This deeply flawed bill would allow 5-to 7-story market-rate apartment buildings on any property within a half mile of a qualifying bus or rail
stop-with no requirements for affordable housing, parking, open space, or landscaping. SB 79 would drastically rezone our community, enabling over 200,000 new housing units in Sherman Oaks alone
-a staggering and irrational number for a neighborhood of just 70,000 residents. SB 79 is a giveaway to developers and real estate investors, not a solution for housing affordability.
We have been fighting hard to stop or significantly amend
SB 79. The City of Los Angeles recently adopted a new Housing Element that responsibly plans for 255,000 new housing units citywide, with a focus on affordability. The Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council has consistently supported responsible housing growth-particularly by increasing density along commercial corridors-without destroying the character of our neighborhoods. That's exactly what the Housing Element achieves; there is no need for SB 79, it will negate all the beneficial planning efforts for which we have fought.2. Sepulveda Transit Corridor:
There are five proposed alternatives: Alts 1 & 3 are monorail above the 405 Freeway (no Alt 2), Alt 4 is heavy rail on elevated tracks above Sepulveda Blvd., Alt 5 is heavy rail subway below Sepulveda BIvd., Alt 6 is heavy rail subway below Van Nuys Blvd. At the August 21
PLUM meeting we reviewed the pros and cons of each alternative and after the community discussion we passed this motion: The PLUM Committee of the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council strongly supports a hybrid alternative to Alternative 6, specifically Alternative 6R, which would combine the route of Alternative 6 with the technology of Alternative 5.
Alternative 6R would encourage much-needed development near the Van Nuys Civic Center, link up to the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail, support the growth of the Sherman Oaks community through its more central location, and provide more direct access to UCLA than other alternatives.
We also support Alternative 5, if engineering studies successfully address the risks associated with the 96" high-pressure water line under Sepulveda Boulevard and include further analysis to determine appropriate station locations, plaza design, and parking capacity.
Passed unanimously.
Please Take Action Now.
We must stand together to protect Sherman Oaks.High Pressure Water Main Under Sepulveda
The water main that broke below Sunset Blvd. in 2014
was 30" diameter. 8 to 10 million gallons of water flowed through UCLA.
The high-pressure water main beneath Sepulveda Blvd. is 96" in diameter.
30* pipe = 4.9 S.F.
96* pipe = 50.3 S.F.
Column Footings
96° High Pressure Warer Main
Neither of these alternatives can be constructed without impacting the 96" high-pressure water main.
We request the engineering studies and the cost to protect this pipe.
Alt 4
Alt 5
Vision Committee Graphic
A different proposed solution
Alt 6R
Alternative 4 Heavy Rail Above Sepulveda
Alternative 5 Subway Tunnel
Alternative 6 Revised
It encourages growth in our village's commercial area,
It does not have the water main issue It links to the Van Nuys Civic Center
Use Alternative 5 tunneling and train technology; we do not lose major retail areas for 5 plus years.

This was unironically in the DEIR for the Sepulveda Transit Corridor, "significant and unavoidable construction impacts" because of a takeover of a parking garage. Like I know CEQA forces them to do this sort of analysis, but it's emblematic of how much the system needs reform...

Really interesting data here. I knew CD4's opposed to apts in SFH streets, but I had no clue how strong the opposition also is in CD2! I'm also intrigued by how a modest majority of CD11 respondents are fine with denser housing in SFH areas, just not in their neighborhood. #LA #urbanism+

With Metrolink's swift response, ridership on what is now the Antelope Valley Line (then it was the Santa Clarita Line) went from ~1000 daily riders to ~22,000 riders in a single week! This lead to Palmdale/Lancaster getting service 10 yrs earlier than initially planned!
An infograph depicting Metrolink's ridership:

Taking a Ride
Metrolink's daily ridership throughout the system increased from 9,027 on Jan. 14, the Friday preceding the quake, to 31,276 on Tuesday. Commuters affected by the closure of the Simi Valley Freeway can take the Ventura County Line from Moorpark to Downtown Los Angeles.
