European identity and values? Maybe I'm cynical after overuse of the phrase 'British values' by ppl who don't share my values, but that feels worrying. Feel like I want to see everyone globally as a potential ally, finding common cause in humanitarian values, and, wider, being in service to life.

It so matters. I don't fly, and it's great to have solidarity from public figures - examples like this are few and far between. Forty years ago my brother explained the environmental cost of flying to me, and I've only flown 3 times since, I think. I also last flew in 2018. Thank you.

And that's why the motion should fail - political parties aren't dictionaries.

This sounds dire, and it's pretty difficult to get many calories from foraging, but purslane, like many weeds, is nutritious and delicious. Eating weeds isn't terrible - relying on them for calories is horrendous.

That's right, and in fact, here in the UK we've all got connections in the region through our government's complicity in our name and the massive part our country played in creating the problem (Balfour declaration etc).

We charge ours up during the cheap hours and it costs 60p a night, which gives us about 20% charge, or about 40 miles. So I can believe it!

But to get real, the whole idea that we'll be able to row backwards on this scale as we drown in the ever-growing chaos of extreme weather, conflict, political instability and financial breakdown is ridiculous anyway!

Thank u @adrianramsay.bsky.social: “It’s good that [EM] is presenting the findings to ... other governments. But it begs the question, why are MPs in this country still being denied access? And ... why has our government still not published its response to how it will address the stark findings?” 👏🥹

The action I'd love to see from @theguardian.com is aligning its economic and political reporting/ commentary with its climate reporting - i.e. interrogating the gap between current mainstream economic assumptions and sustainable economic models e.g. those set out by @richardjmurphy.bsky.social.

For developers, is it a happy accident that LLMs *appear* to be conscious, for instance when they pick up language to describe themselves as 'deeply embarrassed', or say that they 'hallucinate' etc? It's useful for their creators because it could throw doubt on their culpability with a jury.

Does this explainer help? In my simplistic and not-to-be relied on understanding, it suggests that if emissions fell to zero, the co2 in the atmosphere would fall as it was absorbed my land and oceans, thereby stabilising the temp www.carbonbrief.org/explainer-wi...

Explainer: Will global warming ‘stop’ as soon as net-zero emissions are reached? - Carbon Brief
Warming is likely to more or less stop once net-zero emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) is reached, meaning humans have the power to choose their climate future.

That's it, isn't it? It explains all the claims and implications of sentience. It's a way of ultimately getting the courts to believe the companies aren't responsible. It's like saying if a car crashes due to a manufacturing fault, the car is to blame.
120
Zoe James @zolou.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Aren't these companies worried they'll just wipe out some humans and then get sued? What happened to risk assessment in their processes? How come these AI people, and the AI itself, keep talking as if AI was sentient, when it is not? It's just so irritatingly obfuscating. People are doing this. 😡

These deep dives are brilliant - everyone should watch them! They help give context to the national emergency briefings - also essential viewing, for exploring the ramifications. @nebriefing.bsky.social 6/6

Zoe James @zolou.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
To come back to the deep dive, there was also some good discussion about changing rainfall patterns - this year we had a wet start and end to the summer, so the average rainfall figure disguises somewhat the depth of the drought in the middle. We're likely to see more of this kind of issue. 5/6

What wasn't covered was the potential impact on the UK of the growing cold blob and the fading AMOC, which is playing out over a longer time period. It would be great to have a deep dive to explore that. 4/6

Zoe James @zolou.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
This does point up that anyone saying summers are only going to get hotter is wrong, and saying that is likely to provide ammunition for sceptics in the future. But the overall picture is grim - and climate change is forever, or at least for hundreds of thousands of years. 3/6

This was a brilliant deep dive, putting 2026 in context and looking @ possible futures. Some takeaways: 2026 is a 1:9 event in a current climate, but would have been 1 in 1000 pre-industrial. It wd be a typical summer under 2.8 degrees of global warming. There will always be outlier years ... 1/6

Great work from @adrianramsay.bsky.social, proud to be a Green. The motion voted on seemed to be an empty one though - it seemed to be just that this house has considered something. As far as I could tell, the answer from the minister was no to publishing the full report.
