"Hour of the Traces", made around 1930, stands in its centre. A small wooden cage, part scaffold, part guillotine. Three pale shapes hang from its roof: a blind man's cane, a crescent, a broken moon. Lower, a little plaster heart on a trembling wire. Space and time. Desire and death.

You have seen Giacometti's tall figures in countless contexts, the most breathtaking being here in The Tanks / Tate Modern. But then you step into a tiny circular room. You forget to breathe. The endlessly high walls covered by black iron panels cast for the Bankside Power Station.

In 2012, for the Olympics, they built a screen to hide it. Studio Egret West raised 250 metres of steel trees carrying seventy-three titanium leaves: The Shoal. The leaves are hinged, they swing in the wind, and the titanium turns from red to gold to blue with the light.

Stratford, The Shoal. London does not pull down what it would rather not see. It dresses it, and keeps walking. A brutalist shopping centre from 1974, and the unlovely truth of it: the service back, the delivery bays and car-park ramps, faced straight onto the station where the whole city arrives.

Stefano Terranova, "Terra": a gifted young artist from Lugano, sensitive and radical. On 11 September 2009, during a violent storm, he and a friend crossed the railway tracks at Lugano Paradiso and were struck by a passing locomotive. There is no new life at the other side of the tracks. Just hope.

Stefano Terranova, "Terra": un giovane artista luganese di talento, sensibile e radicale. L'11 settembre 2009, durante un violento temporale, lui e un amico attraversarono i binari alla stazione di Lugano Paradiso e furono investiti da una locomotiva di passaggio.
