In the city Engress, street gangs are constantly vying for territory with ever-shifting borders. The Sewer Rats, however, hold territory shaped like a rat. They are strong enough to expand, but a widespread opinion within the gang is that the joke is too good to pass up. #worldbuilding #D&D #DND

One of the city's largest Street Gangs, known for smuggling illicit goods and its tight grip on Ratway. Sewer Rats have a sly, corrupt culture that even sees priests join their ranks for the opportunity to make a little extra coin on the side. It's all about getting a Rat in every business in town and a way down into the tunnels below to store and run valuables.

You can encounter Sewer Rats just about anywhere in the city's underground tunnels, running goods to unaffiliated Sewer Markets using small custom cart-trains. They are typically non-confrontational, but many from Ratway are desperate and likely to see any wealth on display as a good mark. Still, the problem isn't normally the Sewer Rats that you see, it's the one behind you about to nab your coin purse or slip a dagger between your ribs.

The Sewer Rats stopped expanding their territory when they noticed they had accidentally created the vague outline of a rat. As a result, the Buster Straps have been allowed to keep some territory north of The River Engress despite being ousted from The Tribunal, inadvertently sheltered by a joke too good for the Sewer Rats to pass up. This has caused some friction with The Tribunal, but also highlighted the Sewer Rats' power and semi-autonomy from the Bastards of Bastion.

Automatons are one of the engines of the Industrial Revolution in my steampunk-fantasy dystopian setting, Oddities in Engress. I had fun solidifying the worldbuilding for automatons and related terms today. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Feelings of abject horror when considering deeper implications?

A type of Construct made using an Automaton Heart and an Automaton Frame, varying in design, purpose, autonomy, intelligence, and sapience. Significant strides have
been made in understanding the interaction between the heart, the frames Directive Module and the phenomenon of Emergent Ego. These advancements have led to the acknowledgement of emergent ego as a hallmark of sapience in automatons. The Engress Classification of Automatons ensures all sapient automatons are afforded appropriate rights as persons.
Emergent Ego
In Class C (high-frequency heart) automatons, the Directive Module undergoes a process known as Emergent Ego, where the arcane runes of the folded lattice are overwritten, and the automaton's ego takes root. These new arcane features are little understood and have been dubbed "Personality Artifacts."

It has been demonstrated that the directive module houses a significant portion of an automaton's mind. Even upon replacement of the Automaton Heart, a module overwritten by the process of emergent ego retains memories and personality. For this reason, automatons who have shown emergent ego are considered to have a significantly more sophisticated sense of identity than those who do not, creating a discernable and measurable threshold between complex automation and true sapience.

Despite this clearly identifiable threshold, Class B (medium-frequency heart) automaton's are awarded certain rights and privileges as a precautionary measure to ease any transitions caused by unexpected development of emergent ego.

I ask all #ttrpg players this list of questions about their characters before they start playing. With a new Oddities In Engress campaign about to start, I put together a doc with guidelines based on lessons learned. Feel free to repurpose this for your own #dnd character-building needs!

Character Background Questions
In addition to whatever backstory you write, these questions are meant to add depth to your
characters.
I always ask that players provide me with adversaries, friends, regrets, aspirations,
and a profession. This helps us tell a more compelling story together.
Guidelines
Make things up, it's a big world!
Give all characters names.
Give all organizations or groups a character.
Write at least a five sentence paragraph answer to each question.
Each answer should present entirely new information.
Your profession can be unrelated to your class or informed by your class, but
cannot be your class
Your profession cannot be Detective or some form of
bodyguard/security/mercenary.
 I'll be reviewing all your answers with you one on one, if something doesn't work in the
setting, we'll figure out how to change it together
 If you're feeling unsure, you can always message me and ask about any subject in the
setting
 But don't just name them, tell me who they are, how they behave, and what their
connection is to you
 Don't just mention a faction without saying who in that faction you have a connection to
 This helps ensure we have good information to work with
profession, etc...
 This helps ensure you tackle your character from multiple angles, rather than rehashing the
same information through a different perspective
 IE: your adversary should not appear in your regret, your aspiration should not be to
succeed in your profession, etc...
 The wizards profession cannot be "wizard" or "expert of the arcane", that's just your class.
 The Rangers profession could certainly be "Janitor", regardless of how distantly related the
class and profession are. This adds depth.
 Some good examples of class informed professions:
 A storm sorcerer who's an electrician because they have a knack for, and resistance to,
electrical currents
 A bard who's a lawyer because they are an excellent speaker and even better liar

Adversary
Who is someone you know who who you can't stand, and who also can't
stand you?
Friend
Who is someone you know who you'd go out of your way to help and who
would also do the same for you?
Regret
What is something you did or did not do in the pasts that still haunts you to
some degree?
 You have been hired by a detective, but you don't have a detectives license... yet
 A bodyguard/security guard profession doesn't add much substance beyond what's already
provided by your character class

Last night my #dnd players returned to their detective agency to find out a local news agency had written a hit-piece on them. I had the players tell me what would be on it! They spent 40 minutes after the session ended planning their revenge against the news agency. #ttrpg #dungeonsanddragons

I'm in the Yukon! Of course I couldn't help but check out the local TTRPG scene in Whitehorse. Even this far north there's a hobby shop/bar called Titans Tavern and Geek Shop Food was way better than I expected, and there was a ton of people playing mtg, dnd, and warhammer40k. (1/2)

This TTRPG sounds like you should just make foundational rules for how to apply properties with values to materials, abstract those values those for crafting, and provide some examples for game masters. IE: A tooth has values like hardness, sharpness. These values translate to defense or damage.

Curiously, teleportation magic in my setting works best when mapping the planes as flat and using imaginary numbers to form complex planes, projecting a holographic 3d world. Despite their observed spherical appearance, planes are considered mathematically flat! #worldbuilding #ttrpg #dnd

Gangs are feared and sometimes respected more than the police. Particularly, the leading syndicate, the Bastards Of Bastion (BoBs), whose crime fortress is said to be the second beating heart of the City Engress. I've been helping playtest the TTRPG vibe check! It's a ton of fun and has a lot of character options for combat. Try it out! I recommend setting up a combat-oriented oneshot, like a dungeon crawl. Don't be afraid to try interesting combinations of themes and abilities!

My description of attack rolls during my last #DND session felt inspired! The enemy was an occult feux-prophet who rested his hand on the shoulder of the player character whenever attacking. If he hit, the PC simply didn't resist as he casually plunged a dagger into their gut. Unsettling. #ttrpg

In a campaign I kept very detailed notes, but all from the perspective of my character who was an unreliable narrator that believed she was a human in a world of giants. She was a fairy. At the start of each session, we recapped with the story of the last session from her perspective #ttrpg #dnd

In the fight I ran last night, when the enemy got to low HP he went into a berserk state and gained a second turn on the turn order. It went HARD, the players went from hopeful to fearful and excited. Big fan of bosses with multiple turns on the turn order to enhance their threat! #dnd #ttrpg
