Some spiders build complex silk webs to catch prey. Hubble captured a similar effect in space: A massive galaxy (center) merging with dozens of other galaxies. Look closely to find faint galaxies that look like lines that are part of the “web.” Credit: NASA, ESA. 🔭 🧪
A series of blue, orange, and white blobs are contrasted by the black background of space. These tiny, interacting galaxies take the rough shape of a spider web, with some connecting features that look more like hazes than lines. At the center is a bright orange blob, which has two blue linear features connected to it that are pointing to 9 o’clock and 6 o’clock, and hazy blue dots near 12 o’clock. Several orange blobs form a separated arc long the left side. Several more are present in a small grouping on the right, but are closer to the central galaxy than those on the left. Below the central galaxy are two short lines, one is horizontal and one vertical, and neither appear to be fully connected to the central galaxy. A few very faint red dots are visible near the edges.
