Gang - You may hear more about the ‘grandparents’ rights movement. It might sound reasonable at first. Be assured: everyone in this movement (and it is a movement) is a perpetrator of child abuse. There are no exceptions: grandparents with legitimate problems who really care leave immediately.

But yes there are people lobbying for this, and a lot of the people they lobby do not, and have chosen not to, understand abuse dynamics

Oooooooooooh yeah so ‘grandparents rights’ is a very specific movement for a very, very specific type of person, not a general descriptor of a cohort ‘I’m tempted to say ‘ask me how I know’ but tbh if you’ve made a guess, you’ve guessed right

2/ Leading to a genuinely confusing user experience and lack of confidence about what is and is not legit Coupled with A huge and violent surge in scamming, driven by the radically reduced cost of both scamming and scamming at scale > Society-wide economic problem. Big one

Fr though I just left the bank (needed a cheque) and I think we might be in perfect storm territory As you will doubtless know, beyond a certain level ‘more security’ is actually ‘less security’ Old creaky systems Unevenly distributed UX, focussed on onboarding new customers & new products/1

Anyhow, a lot of our most famous people are either very sad about how limited their impact ultimately was, or shockingly egotistic and unaware of how limited their impact was. We’re fun at parties.

(Which is ironic because literally the whole purpose of design is to change things, commonly expressed as ‘from current situations to preferred situations’, Herbert Simon) (ask me about my masters thesis in public service design capabilities I dare you)

Unfortunately a lot of the luminaries in my industry who I’ve met irl didn’t turn out to be so great. (Human centred design (HCD) and related design disciplines. We got a LOT of idealists, we’ve had a LOT of big thinkers, but our actual ability to get stuff done is mixed at best.)

I live next to a suburb called cook, we have one of those big explainer suburb signs like in the article, it says COOK, and just for the record the Discount Hut at the Jamison centre does a very brisk trade in white spray paint. It’s always in stock, too!

Why aren't new suburbs named after Prime Ministers?
There's a tradition of naming Canberra suburbs after Prime Ministers but not every former leader is represented.

Ah but you can fish the lake with no shame! It’s environmentally beneficial! Death to carp! Also there are jellyfish in lake BG. FACTS. Menzies specifically didn’t want a place (town, suburb, or iirc street) named after him. Institutions were fine.

Zoe Rose @zoerose.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
No I will be like Menzies, name nothing after me! (This is quality Canberra lore and absolutely true, he never wanted to be glorified topographically)

Hahaha for context that literally did happen, to be fair I had four cars out front at the time and three of them were clearly write offs Well one wasn’t *quite* a write off… 🙃

Downer still has bogans, downer still has people who ‘do sculpture’, downer still has people who got here from Bhutan like two years ago, downer still has genuine old-school share houses. You move to downer. (Related: get ready to be genuinely surprised by Canberra’s extensive Bhutanese community)

Watson: Maybe, but too many young people. Hackett: maybe, but too many old people. Aranda: join the squadrons of people who still believe in their hearts that they are ‘left’ but also make enough &$$ that they can buy electric cars new. (It’s a Skoda, thanks for asking)

You move to downer. If you move south of the lake anywhere but Curtin you’ll die in your heart (and even Curtin is a stretch). Avoid the false gods of Turner O’Connor and Lyneham, they have fallen to people like me. You move to downer.

Still affordable ish, central, you got the gang gang cafe right there (cafe/bar/performance venue), you get the weird old houses with the gardens someone planted with weird stuff 50 years ago. Or to summarise: vibes

/new customer. Never heard of them before, big fan now. I’m 47, professional, in Australia (shipping sucks oh well), tend to spend $$$ on very few, very good garments. Congratulations you got me!

@trufelman.bsky.social hey hey! Absolutely loved the second hand clothes episode. You gotta be collecting impact metrics, right? If yes please tell the real real that they sure as hell achieved brand awareness with me, I’m slap bang in the middle of their target market and I’m an all but guaranteed/

Getting the issue in front of senior people who can *independently* conclude the outcome is unfair is the outcome, wellbeing type policies are a way to get there
130
Zoe Rose @zoerose.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Policy. School will have a policy related to something vapid like respect or if you’re lucky something a bit meatier, like psychosocial safety. If they don’t vic ed does. Escalate based not on fairness (which can be argued) but on the effect of unfairness on you (which can).

Oh no i agree with you absolutely. I’d also say (as a ‘yes and’ kind of a statement) that by definition reactivity is reactionary. Which used to be an insult *reserved for conservatives*! That’s is now, we’re the reactionaries! It’s not good enough, not at all!

Further context: You can only buy sausage in bread. There are no other foods on sale. You can also buy a can of fizzy drink, standard size. That's it, there are no other things on sale. This is Australia-wide. The lunch of kings.

Zoe Rose @zoerose.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Can confirm. The Bunnings sausage is effectively our national dish (it's a long thin sausage in a piece of supermarket white bread, with onions and tomato sauce). Every weekend the stall is manned by a different charity, they make a motza.

Should it be on the PBS? Yes, obviously. It is for people over 65 or so you can wait but on the other hand - you can also not get shingles. Shingles = horrible nerve pain, not just ‘a rash’.
