Between Q1 FY22 and Q2 FY26, the share who were partially breastfed rose by 5 percentage points (from 23 to 28 percent) while the share who were fully breastfed rose by even more — 6 percentage points, from 12 to 18 percent.

To partially mitigate lasting health consequences, it's more important than ever for these children to get the other benefits they qualify for, which might include #WIC, free or reduced-price #schoolmeals, or Summer EBT, but losing SNAP makes enrollment more burdensome.

Black WIC participants breastfeed at lower rates than others. Data are not yet available to measure the 2022-2025 increases by race, but a sustained increase in breastfeeding could improve the health of WIC participants of any racial or ethnic group.

On policy grounds and as a DC resident, I'm dismayed by this federal interference. It will hurt people who are struggling to make ends meet, make filing taxes more difficult for everyone, and weaken DC's budget outlook, all while undermining local decision-making.
