Those who face evil head on can't survive without the wise and the warm to lift them up. The burden is far too great to bear alone.

Everything they say is couched in the unspoken lie that we chose to be this way. Every. Fucking. Thing.

Or perhaps, just perhaps, we're dealing with complex mental and emotional trauma from the past five years of hell that renders every fresh incident a reminder of how bad things could get.

This is why it's a genocide, regardless of whether Singal's pulling the lever to a gas chamber.

Parents doing the 'lgbt shield' BS doesn't stop gay kids from coming out but it does make it harder to get past the internal homophobia the parents impart, so it manifests later in life.

There is also the fact that this is among highschoolers, who are often being *specifically propagandized to hide their identities* over the past few years. That 9th graders dropped most literally just says it's taking longer for folks to have the chance to question their identities.

Every sixth question: "GOD" ....yep, those sure are one form of political perspective.

In what circumstance would that translate to 'failed student' where a professor would have caught and fixed it?
000
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
In which case it seems like the solution is to make sure that student knows how to use AI to address their failings, no?
000
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
And to, "with proper intent and direction, AI bypasses or fixes those issues." Which is the point I started with.
000
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Which does, I hasten to point out, go right back to "skill issue."
000
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
That's just context. If you tell an AI how you understand a subject and ask it to critique, it will find the flaws in your understanding. If you don't tell an AI how you understand, but the AI can ask you questions to ascertain your understanding, same outcome.

Never has a public figure been so *clearly*, *obviously* bipolar.
010
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Again, I simply don't think this is the case. One could certainly argue it is possible to badger an AI into reinforcing bad opinions. This much is true. But as far as finding weak spots in your understanding of a subject - *no?* Tell the AI your understanding of a subject and ask it to correct you

Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
To take it beyond math, one can easily imagine a system for explaining and conversing in depth on (say) sociology, drawing from textbooks for the factual basis but engaging in a back and forth conversation to build understanding. Language learning apps are just starting on this angle and it is bueno

Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Likewise, one of my recent projects is a drill game of sorts which *specifically identifies weaknesses and reinforces those.*
100
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Nah, this one I still disagree on. AI is significantly better at tailoring to one's style if one can use it for such. As an example, I struggle with math generally. AI helps simplify, visualize, and provides inline definition lookups which specifically tailor to my style.
100
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
If so: Agreed. The point I am attempting to argue is that the former is more important than the latter for teaching.
000
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
So to be clear, we both agree that AI is perfectly competent at the "imparting knowledge generally" definition? And lacking at the "Replacing a human in a professorial capacity" definition?
100
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
You responded to me. If you're debating a question I didn't ask, then you are the one raising proxies.
000
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Unless you misunderstood my comment, which was simply "AI isn't as good at teaching in the way that humans teach as humans are, but that is not to say it is bad at teaching generally, which it is not."
000
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Either you mean "good at teaching in the way humans teach" or you mean "good at imparting knowledge, regardless of the method." You're vacillating between definitions depending on the comment you're responding to.
100
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
And yet, the capabilities of the models are increasing. Especially in the most recent few generations, they *are specifically good at explaining concepts without 'mannered language.* Which is the thing you're stating they're bad at.
000
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
You haven't managed to provide evidence of this claimed deficiency aside from 'doesn't use a syllabus' and 'can't write an award winning textbook end to end.'
000
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Okay. Let's say that good pedagogy encompasses every possible method of teaching people a subject. AI is not terrible at pedagogy. It is arguably a lot better than a book, or a professor, *even now, even in a general LLM and not one devoted to teaching.* Which is why I'm using it to teach myself.
001
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
People certainly have said that about Opus 5.0. Few to no people say that about Opus 5.5, or Fable. Or Opus 4.6. Point being, this is a fault with *a specific model*, which you are for some reason using to cast aspersions on the whole concept of AI coding.
000
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
AI is not as good as humans at the framework of imparting knowledge built specifically to help humans impart knowledge to other humans. That is neither the question at hand nor the answer.
000
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
The first, meanwhile, *is another artifact of centuries of 'how to teach'. It's like saying an automobile will never supplant a horse because it is inferior at pulling surreys.
000
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I would sincerely protest the second. Perhaps for an esoteric subject whose contents simply aren't part of the training data it would falter; however, a targeted training dataset removes that obstacle.

Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
A textbook is the gold standard quite simply because for hundreds of years nothing else has been feasible to replace it. It is not a gold standard by dint of merit. If it were, no one would need professors to give lectures.
000
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
AI can provide or assist with all three of these in ways that simply aren't cost effective for a human to do.
110
Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Honestly, I don't think a book is the best way to learn a subject. A well-narrated audiovisual production beats the pants off a book for wide level knowledge, if not depth; a reactive one-on-one learning companion is better for comprehension; and a gamified interactive element helps with memory.

Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
You started by saying 'it's terrible at XYZ' and all of those XYZs are things I am actively using AI to help with. You then followed up with 'write an award-worthy textbook for competitive exams' which is *not that.*

AI is one of those things which has quickly politicized. Anyone who believes AI is a slop factory (which it definitely can be, especially early versions) will struggle to see anything AI assists with as anything but slop (which isn't necessarily true, especially in my field)

This seems like a goalpost shift and a half, my friend. I am quite happy with the tools I've built for myself via prompt. They are helping me learn courses I would never have been able to without them.

Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Or, you can have it adapt existing books to be easier to understand, make problems to practice with, visualize things with pictures- any number of aides for learning difficulties. I get the urge to reflexively discard the existence of AI as slop, but I fear you're missing the forest for the trees.

This reminds me of what happens when TERFs take over control of a group's leadership structure. Internal power plays let them subsequently remove and silence all opposition, and the group becomes another arm of the TERF cult.

It's also really good, believe it or not, for education - if one *wants* to learn. (Or awful, if one doesn't)

I don't want our legacy to be a tragedy. I don't want our oppressors to be Reaganized. I want it to be a polemic. I want Musk and Rowling and Trump and their ilk to be considered by history in the same damn breath as Hitler.

Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Is "Rent" the only story from our time worth writing, because it's the one our oppressors' children may care to read? Because at least then it's our words, even if filtered through a lens of tragedy so thick the surviving villains all get sanewashed away?

Zoe M @zoeinbinary.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Sometimes I think about writing one of those seminal pieces of tragic fiction - the ones that capture how it feels to live in the dark times, so sensible people a hundred years can gasp in something approaching sympathy. Is leaving an artifact of why we matter, truly our highest remaining calling?
