I love this podcast - even if the book isn’t my first choice, I always stick around for the guest’s recommendation. My bookshelves are groaning even louder because of this.

Wholly recommend listening to this, and attending the festival. The interview with James on the boxing film podcast is also tremendous.

Haven’t yet made the trip, but I’m signed up for the online portion - a bargain. Looking forward to it.

I saw it on the big screen at last year’s Film Noir Fest in Weston-Super-Mare. It’s a B-film, sure, but it lends itself to the larger canvas (especially the street scenes). And I recommend this year’s fest later this month.

#Letterboxd #LastFourWatched #FilmSky Hmm, gave four stars to them all (for different reasons) - must be going soft 😀 Each has been rewarding and has stretched my experience in a good way - and that’s what it’s all about, I guess?

Wow - these are great to see. I fear that the new Waynflete Quad -being constructed by my alma mater - may be replacing one eyesore with another, so these give some reason for optimism.

Ah yes, a bumper non-random harvest from Warner Archive. I’m planning to plunder the Cinematographe collection, hoping there are some titles in the Vinegar Syndrome mini-sale tomorrow.

So we had Breaking Away, American Graffiti, One False Move, Melvin and Howard, and um The Brady Bunch Movie. That last one was a hard survive after 8 prior hours. Breaking Away was by far my favourite of the lot. I'll be back for another one.

Frank Perry is an acquired taste, I think. I haven't acquired it yet, but I'll give him another try when this hits the doormat.

Perhaps it wasn't a morning film after all. I'm on the same bluray trajectory.....some Warner Archive stuff (yes, yes, Letty Lynton of course) is in the post....

Bracing myself for another PCC Mystery marathon tonight; looking forward to whatever they throw at us. I’m a mere dot at the rear of the last survivors photo… will try to remember to get out there tomorrow morning.

Seriously, the annual Radiance subscription gives me more pleasure than I can articulate- last year’s Radical Japan boxset might be eclipsed by this one. #FilmSky

Listening to the enjoyable Red & Black podcast from Locarno; excellently-capsuled history with depressing contemporary nuances, and more films to (re)discover, though I'd rather be in Switzerland. #Locarno79 #FilmSky www.locarnofestival.ch/press/press-...

Following a very brief interaction with @andrewkelly.bsky.social at #cineredis26 and a cleanup of my library, I’m diving back into my Projections collection. Boorman fantastic stuff. #FilmSky #BookSky

I looked up M+ afterwards, and they seem to have some great stuff, (almost) none of it on physical media. Come on @filmsradiance.bsky.social or someone, get in there!

You think you’ve got the system beat, then you run out of paparazzi. Vivid restoration by M+ of a HK procedural with a twisty plot and too many competing (dis)loyalties to keep up with. It all seems labyrinthine and untangleable - then it ends. Breathless and engaging. #cineredis26 #9 #FilmSky

Propagandic Boulting Brors war film that tells the story of pre-war ICE, uh Nazi, repression in Germany. Over-optimistic in its belief in the power of Christian goodness to see the country through. Some hard-hitting moments including a teenage rape and prison camp torture. #cineredis #8 #FilmSky

Poetic parable played beautifully against the landscape of rural Morocco. I underappreciated it, as the deep historical context is sadly beyond my ken. The ritual insistence and the anti-materialist themes, however, are clear and I enjoyed it (Mirage, 1979). #cineredis26 #7 #FilmSky

The petty childishness of people who are allegedly steering taste for serious cinemagoers, and their inability to migrate their obsessions to realrelationships is painfully funny. A clever pairing at #cineredis26 (film #6 for me) with Goodbye, Dragon Inn. #FilmSky

Playful depiction of the vicissitudes of Indian student life, in an academic world that is cynical in its apportionment of honours. A strong sense of the resilience of youth, the joy associated with the pains of being tested, and a happy unpredictability of outcomes. #cineredis26 film #5 #FilmSky

It is hard to convey the pleasure gleaned from watching a group of men at a urinal, a woman limping towards an unseen projectionist, or disparate people in a cinema with banks of empty seats. The lingering enables more on the screen in a way that is surprisingly sensuous. #cineredis26 #4 #FilmSky

Austere, difficult, a room or rooms filled with recognisable characters distilled to their unlikeable essences. Some marvellous monochrome photography. On balance, though, I’d prefer to have Ed Norton and Penelope Cruz pop downstairs and propose group sex. #cineredis26 film#3 #FilmSky

The intimacy and troubled familiarity of a close community, comfortable in its time-honoured relationships, now put under deep stress by impossible adult choices. Touching and harrowing, superficial and deep in equal measure, Burnett takes the simple and adds unbearable complexity. #cineredis26 #2

Excellent nostalgic trip this lunchtime through 50 years of Artificial Eye / Curzon with @markcosgrove.bsky.social and Jake Garriock. Memories for me of what seems like endless months of being able to watch Celine and Julie Go Boating in rep, yet still come out baffled each time. #cineredis26

The most barmy episode of Stingray ever made? Anything happens in every half hour. Like the dog that licks his own balls, Diabolik robs because he can. Eva wants him to. Zinko's plans to foil Diabolik crumble like Dastardly's efforts to win the Wacky Races. Beyond camp. #CineRedis26 film #1.

I didn’t think I was much of a fan of boxing movies, but I find to my surprise I have three of your first four in my physical media collection! The structure of this one, in real time, is tremendous and shows off Wise’s savviness as a director and Ryan’s cragginess as an actor. Top drawer.

I saw this when it came out - it was my A level year. One of the first arthouse films I saw, I must seek it out. Somehow connected in my mind with Gielgud sparring with Richardson in No Man’s Land on the stage just before; equally obscure and affecting.

I think he came on in one or two of the group matches, and he always seems to be warming up. Toney might be off sightseeing somewhere.

Tuchel has been sparing with squad usage - I keep wondering whether Watkins and Toney might yet play a key part (hopefully not in the third/fourth place playoff)

Night Train plus intro last week was great - worth the horrendous rush hour traffic going towards the BFI. And Ishiguro is so wonderfully modest (while knowing everything, of course).

You raise two interesting questions: 1. How naughty is it to stream an old film on YouTube? (I do it a lot) and 2. Will it still be there when I inevitably try to watch it this evening? 😁

Peter Clinch @zipnolan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
I’m booked in to see Night Train on Tuesday (heat permitting). A trifle bleaker than Charters and Caldicott, but I have high hopes 😀

Peter Clinch @zipnolan.bsky.social · 21/06/2026
In order: Casualties of War, Sid and Nancy, The Wrestler, Leaving Las Vegas, Life is Beautiful. Bleak? Arguably not, but a well-curated set of films with poignancy at their core. And yes, I’m knackered.

Tangentially, I am planning to attend the Bleak Week mystery marathon at the PCC in a couple of weeks. 8 hours of bleakness…. I may be mad.

I have that Saturday dilemma too, but I think the solution is to go for the Sunday Queen Kelly at the Curzon. However, the online programme has that at 1 pm, but my ticket says 6pm which I hope is right as it avoids a Sunday dilemma!
