I try not to get too self indulgent with references, but I was writing a comic about a bunch of people having vivid hallucinations in the middle of a carnival... so I absolutely couldn't resist putting in a little nod to Ron Gilbert's controversial ending to Monkey Island 2. kblue.zipcomic.uk
Excerpt from a black and white comic book set in a funfair. Panel 1: A man in a trucker cap and a bushy beard is screaming "earthquake! earthquake!" A blond woman next to him is looking confusing and saying "earthquake? There's no earthquake?" Panel 2: The blonde woman looks on at a crowd of people who are also screaming in terror. A man with a long hair and a beard says: "How am I in a carnival? I'm supposed to be a might pirate living deep in the Caribbean!" The blond woman responds: "Umm... excuse me?" Panel 3: the blonde woman looks on in horror as an octopus ride which the man in the first panel was previously controlling is left to run unsupervised as people run around in panicked chaos.

These kids didn't anticipate the mayhem they'd unleash by locking away a cryptid. Little did they realise, it induces nightmare hallucinations in the creatures around it, and their playground is about to become a carnival of horrors! kblue.zipcomic.uk #indiecomics #scifi #cryptids
Black and white comic book art of a circus tent. Word balloons are coming from the tent, indicating someone inside is talking. Balloon 1 says "What do you reckon it is? Some kind of alien?" Balloon 2: "Don't be daft, Callum, it's like, a lizard, or...?"The next panel depicts a cryptid creature resembling a spider. There are word balloons above the spider, indicating people talking around it. Balloon 1: "We should tell an adult!" Balloon 2: "What's the matter Callum? Scared it's gonna phone the mothership?" The first speaker responds: "Aw, shut up!"Black and white comic book art of two kids: a little girl with a backwards baseball cap, and a boy sticking out his tongue. The girl says "But then we'll have to say we watched it eat half the sausages out of the food caravan before it ran here. Right after dad told me to stay away from the fairground while everyone was setting up."In the next panel the boy is closing a cupboard underneath a dressing mirror. The girl is walking out of the room. She says: "Let's just pretend we don't know how that happened, and keep it locked in here."

He knows all about your little discover during that debacle with The Hive."The man continues to speak: "Well, I think this little side project is even more important to our CEO than anyone knew. I still don't know why he cares about this mystery venture as much as he does, but you made me look good, Lucas."Dialogue continues: "Keep doing that, and big things are going to happen for you, my boy."Dialogue continues: "There's just one thing I need you to do first. The Zip logo is blurred, as if moving very quickly itself. Cover 2: A speedster superheroine wearing goggles runs. In the background a face being penetrated by cables is screaming in pain. Two bewildered blue collar types stand amid the chaos, and a skeletal figure looms behind them all. Text on the cover reads: Spectacular debut issue of a very unusual speeder! Page one. Comic panels of a superheroine in a costume modelled on a tracksuit and goggles. She is running at super speed after a car, and narrating in caption boxes. “Civilisation was never built for superhumans. And that’s why my life sucks. I’m sorry if that sounds melodramatic. But it’s true. I’m in my 20s. But assuming I don’t get hit by a truck or something, by the time I’m about 40, my heart will pack in. It just beats too fast. Making friends is hard when everyone else talks in slow motion. And the amount of food I need to recharge my body is insane, and it’s all down to these stupid superpowers. Yeah, that’s me. Call me Zip. I dress up and I fight crime. Or sometimes, I chase after idiots driving way too fast in the middle of Bedminster. I can’t run away from who I am. Actually that’s pretty much the only thing I can’t run from, and I can’t lead much of a normal life either. So I do this. It… it gives me a sense of purpose… I guess.”Page two. Zip approaches the reckless driver’s window, but he is shocked to see a woman effortlessly running as fast as a sports car. Zip speaks out loud now. Zip: “Hey fire! Where’s the buddy? Oops! I meant to say, well you know what I meant.” Reckless driver: “Huh?” Zip: “Ugh. Too fast for you right?” Each word in Zip’s next sentence is elongated by adding many vowels, “hello road user. You have far exceeded the speed limit.” Reckless driver: “Aiieeee!” Zip: Wait! Don’t swerve! Brake! Emergency…” The car crashes. Zip narrates with another caption: “So, uh, before you judge me too harshly. I would just like to point out that I have to live with these powers all the time I occasionally forget that all the regular people out there aren’t expecting to see women running around at 60mph.” Scene change: a hospital exterior. Zip speaks to a nurse from somewhere off panel inside the building. Nurse: “And your name is, miss?” Zip: “Zip.”Page 3. An A&E ward. Zip is being interrogated by a nurse. The nurse is trying to pry information from Zip about her involvement in the accident. Zip is mostly concerned with figuring out if the man who was in the car crash will be okay. After the nurse confirms he probably will, Zip leaves before she can stop her. In narration, she reveals that her real name is Allison, and that the reason she is nicknamed Zip is that “it’s the sound I make when I run past you."Page four. Scene change. Two men have parked their black van in front of a rundown office building. They are moving some strange electronic equipment into the building and wondering out loud what the "boys at the lab" have sent them to set it up for. They only know how to set the apparatus going, and how to monitor the readings it gives, but not what the experiment they are running actually tells the unseen scientists they are doing all of this for. One of the men remarks that he is surprised that the grid will handle the amount of power the equipment requires, and his colleague reassures him that although local substations might experience a brief spike, it'll go unnoticed.

I wrote Zip with disability primarily in mind, when thinking about how superhero tropes would evolve as the subculture of a marginalized group, I took inspiration from other real-world protected classes to inform my world building. The word 'closeted' in this scene very deliberate. #pridemonth
An excerpt from a black and white comic book, depicting two women speaking to each other. The first woman says: "but... what if the wrong people find out who I am?" The second woman says: "There's wrong people all over the world. Everyone here knows that. And the scary thing is we don't often know who they are until we let ourselves be vulnerable. But if you stay closeted forever, you'll never find out who the right people are."
