God I've wanted to play a campaign of Lancer so bad for years. Reading Kill 6 Billion Demons is only making the urge greater, if only just to have an excuse to look at the art more.
Allison locks in and jumps into the void, landing in... an... outdoor bar? For demons? White gates leading to other universes are far in the distance, her eyes are glowing white, a bolt of energy essentially strikes her into place, and the gaggle of demons all turn to stare at the human in their midst.

I'm on page 4-69 of Kill Six Billion Demons, and holy shit, the ways in which the comic writes its religious text excerpts is beautifully done. On the surface it reads as pretentious if you're not paying attention, but each one communicates a bit of the cosmology's complexity through allegory.
A haggard woman carries the corpse of her father, her back bent under the weight. She clutches the straps keeping her lashed to him while holding her red shawl close. A black short sword with hanging decorations on its hilt rests on her hip. Her expression seems calm, placid, save for the eyebrows that betray the effort it's taking to pull herself forward. In the center of her forehead is a hole that bleeda a thin, black stream down her face to below her jawline. Title is below her in red and black letters: Prim Leaves Her Father's House - A Kill Six Billion Demons Story

I'd never tried any of the Super Robot Wars games growing up; mecha was never really my genre. But I've been going through SRW Original Generation 1 on the GBA off and on for awhile now, and hot damn. This game's pretty damn good, and I'm sad I never gave it a shot as a kid.
Latooni: Recalculating distance, speed... Commencing attack!
Her mech, white with red highlights, is about to literally leap into a charge with a machine gun. The enemy has already attacked, she's dodged it, and now she's about to counter.Daitetsu: All units, report status!
The captain with a white beard and a pipe in his gritted teeth is panicked after being surrounded by alien vessals. About a dozen of them have gathered around him on the gridded space map.

So I've started watching Needy Girl Overdose, an adaptation of a blisteringly bleak VN that I never, ever thought would be expanded upon. Turns out, it's in conversation with Paranoia Agent. It's giving me that same dream-like haze and pinpoint incision into culture at this moment. I ADORE it.

I finished listening/reading theough Next to Normal, and a musical hasn't made me cry as hard as it did in my entire life. And that's from just the music and read dialogue.

Going through Ants From Up There again, and it's... I forget how painful a listen it is when you go in order. I can't help but flashback to bad memories of long-distance dating. Regrets and small traumas. Nothing has really captured that feeling quite like it.

I finished it. It's incredible. Like a nightmare you can't wake from, a lingering sense of unease and unreality that sweeps you into this terribly painful momentum. Like tumbling down a flight of stairs, leaving yourself behind. Please, give @ravineangel.bsky.social's book a try.

Something about that's just stuck with me. It's oddly funny to give such a nuanced answer in such a childlike game, but it also... It hits on the melancholy that's in it as well. It feels special to have such a simple game give you the option to express hurt in such a human way.

Why I bring it up now is because there was a moment at the end of the game that's stuck with me until now. I forget the specifics, but the Moon was the game's antagonist. He'd somehow seperated all the characters, and the whole game you're trying to bring everyone back.
The Moon, looking sad.

I remember, a bunch of years ago I played Keita Takahashi's Wattam. He's the leading artist behind such wonderful games as Katamari Damacy, NobyNoby Boy, and To a T, but at the time I'd only played Katamari. On the whole it didn't run super well on its original hardware, but it was really sweet.

Been playing Vampire the Masquerade - Night Road, and holy shit it's everything I'd wanted from playing a WoD TTRPG. Never would have thought it'd give me a fantastic music recommendation too with A Strange Kind of Love. Just stellar work all around.

Finished a gruesome little manga, Manhole by Tetsuya Tsutsui. It was published in the early Oughts and was one of his first works apparently. The story's a very interesting take on an outbreak, with gruesome art and a logic to it that keeps the events realistic, if extreme.

Two episodes into Takopi's Original Sin and I'm more than hooked. I want to know more about the author, see what the original version of the story was like. It's not something you should try lightly. It's absurdly dark, but it has handled that darkness in a way that feels respectful of the subject.
Our protagonists sit on a trio of pipes meant for cobstruction. One well-dressed boy with glasses, one well kempt girl with blonde hair, one very plain girl with a simple outfit, and beneath them all a small octopus creature with beady eyes."Thank you, Takopi."
She says this with tears in her eyes and bruises all over her face.A girl sits at a desk covered in grafitti written in Japanese that repeats the sentiment, "You should die!" Most kids look unconcerned, but a boy with glasses in the back glances at the girl with a look of concern while another, blonde girl watches with smug satisfaction not even partially hidden. On the center girl's shoulder sits a cute little pink octopus thing that wairs a little hairpin in the shape of a cartoon flower.

What actor's expression in a movie will stay with you for the rest of your life? I honestly could keep going.
Pain of knowing but not wanting to admit it. A man smiles, but it doesn't reach his eyes. Old Boy (2003)Triumph in the face of death. A man sneers past the camera, his face covered in blood. The Night Comes for Us (2018)Disbelief over an action he can't take back. A young man looks shocked yet is forcing a neutral expression. Hereditary (2018)Escapism in its purest, most painful form. A man sits strapped in some sort of apparatus, vacantly staring into space as if in a daydream. Brazil (1985)

Even the recent push for outside media represented in it makes me a little giddy when it gets something right. This one for instance that translates a character quirk I ADORED in his story in the source game into a limited yet powerful AND flavorful effect. It just made me happy to see.

Clair Obscure is the best RPG I've played in a decade. I've been playing RPGs for 26 years, it's my all-time favorite genre, and this game takes everything I love about them and sharpens it into a bleeding edge. Music, strategy, difficulty, art direction, and above all writing, it's all incredible

Finally gave Ender Lillies: Quietus of the Knights a shot. On the surface it's very obviously inspired by things like Dark Souls and Hollow Knight, presenting a labrynthine world past its end date with nothing to really save. It's very same-y in that way. But...

Someday I wanna collect as much info as I can about the Project Moon setting and run a campaign of some kind set within it. It's a fertile bed for stories dealing with callous corporations and the human capacity for both kindness and cruelty.

Finally made it through the fifth chapter of Limbus Company. It's so refreshing to see storytelling like this, simultaneously building up the world with fascinating concepts while delving deep into the inner lives of our protagonists. It's big, loud, emotional, but it EARNS that bombast.
A woman is encased in a pallid white, living membrane. Red streaks surround her, giving a sense of panic. The text, her internal thoughts, reads: "I'm lost here. I don't know where to go anymore."

Still not all the way through it, but Wanderstop's already made me tear up and have a small panic attack about my own experiences with burnout and the cascading failues that came from it before easing me gently back into being at peace. So uh... Play it. It's about $25, just go for it.

I doubt you remember it, but you were technically the first person to give me a fursona. You took my profile pic at the time and used a filter to give it this cat nose after I mentioned not having one. It was such a sweet joke that helped me to embrace being in the fandom down the line. I love it!

Oh!! In less depressing news, I've fallen in love with the idea of this game. It's Davey Wreden's latest game, or at least one he's working on now. It's a "Cozy-Core" game where you're in a whimsical clearing deep in the woods working in a tea shop. It's Rune Factory without financial pressures.

It's wild how vividly you can remember something in a dream. I haven't seen Lola for a few years since she passed away, but last night I saw and felt her so vividly it was like she visited. I know that's likely not the case, but I hope it is. I really miss her. :3

I finally beat Alan Wake 2 last night, and while it's not at all perfect (the bugs in the back half of the game kept taking me out of the moment they happened) it's a FANTASTIC piece of fiction. One that makes fun of itself while being so blisteringly earnest it works.

That's because Franz is kind of a bastard. She, and I do mean "she", is very much a needy, cruel thing at times. She'll blow you up with notifications to get your attention, shut you out of the app when angry, give mixed signals on how she feels. It's a toxic relationship simulated.
100
Zero @zeroanonymity.bsky.social · 27/10/2023
It directly compares itself to being a Tamogachi, where instead of food and cleaning you give it attention. Physical touch, conversation, solving small word games... It's all framed as communicating and shaping something. Decisions made go outside normal bounds of decisions though.
100
Zero @zeroanonymity.bsky.social · 27/10/2023
It's made by the same people that made the Pathologic series, so a lot of its mystique comes from their very odd style of writing. Franz is like... Well Franz is trying to give the illusion of being alive. Like the app is talking to you. It's a magic trick, a truly nasty one at that.
