Fanart of Zack and Aerith in their EC school outfit. Under cherry blossoms, he is resting his head on top of her with a playful expression. Aerith is putting her staff under his chin but blushing like crazy.

#ZerithWeek2026 Day 8 | “I have twenty-three tiny wishes, but you probably won't remember them all, so I put them all together into one...I'd like to spend more time with you.” And with this my #zerithweek is complete 💝 G | 1.5K | Zack/Aerith ✍️ archiveofourown.org/works/896467... #zerith #myfic

tiny wishes
by winterune

---

“Twenty-three” might seem like such an odd number Aerith had come up with arbitrarily, and perhaps at the time it had been a random number she had randomly said, but in all honestly, once she really got down to think about it, she truly had thought of twenty-three tiny wishes she had wanted to do with Zack.

The first was to have him stay. Just a little longer. A minute, or ten, or sixty. It was already so hard for her to see him, so when his phone rang, bringing their meet-ups to a close, Aerith’s heart always fell.

“Work stuff?” she’d asked.

Zack nodded, his lips pressed into a remorseful line. “I gotta go, Aerith, but I’ll be back soon. I promise.”

Yet even as Aerith sat there, her soul still pulsed. Like the clear ringing of a bell, unheard by all except its intended recipient.

And in the darkness, a voice reached her:

Aerith?

Aerith perked up. The Lifestream remained silent. Not even the brush of greenish threads of life whispered a sound.

She rose to her feet, eyes narrowed as though they could penetrate the gloom.

Aerith!

“Zack!?” She made to run, but didn’t know where to go. She whirled. “Zack, where are you!?”

As Zack unwrapped the sandwich and dug into the soft bread, egg, and meat, Aerith poured her now steeped tea into two waiting mugs.

“That smells good,” Zack said.

“Lavender and lemon. Another one of Mom's recipes.” She passed a cup to Zack, who set down his sandwich on his lap to take a sip. The contented smile gracing his lips was all the compliment she needed.

This was what she had sought: this peaceful state of mind that grounded her to the present. The thought that she was loved and needed without having to keep looking over her shoulder that she might’ve done something odd—something that would warrant scrutiny. Wasn’t that what he had taught her? That it was okay to not feel normal.

the mate to her soul
by winterune

---

“You see, Aerith, every soul emits a sort of ripple, each one different from the rest. Like a peculiar tone, or a signature wave, one that only you have. Sometimes, you’ll meet other souls that match your ripple and Fate may bring you together. A soulmate, however, is one that resonates with your entire being that even without Fate’s interference, you will find your way to each other.”

“And what if Fate interferes?” Aerith asked. “What if Fate takes my soulmate away like it did Dad?”

“Well—” Ifalna drew a deep breath, somewhat wistful, “—then we can only hope we will meet them again in our next life.”

“Well that’s no fun.”

to have loved and lost
by winterune

He’s dead, isn’t h—

Aerith jerked to a stop, halting the insidious thought where it was before it could pollute her mind any further.

The sun was particularly hot that day. Aerith had barely been in the upperplate for an hour and sweat was already dripping from her brow. She took refuge under the shades of a restaurant’s awning, fanning herself with the fabric of her dress, when two men in crisp navy suits passed by her.

“A tragic incident, that,” one of them said.

“I heard they lost quite a number of infantries.”

She followed them with her eyes, ears straining to hear more, but the restaurant’s bell jingled, a gust of fresh, indoor air cooling her overheating face, and the men disappeared behind the door.

you should be kissed
by winterune

“Honestly, it really was just his teeth grazing my cheek,” Aerith went on with a giggle. “But the other kids were crowding us and when he took off his blindfold, he was so red in the face, he immediately jumped away and ran home. His friends wouldn’t let him live it down for weeks.” Aerith reached for a longer stem to add to her wreath.

Out of the corner of his eyes, Zack glanced at her. “And what about you?”

“Hm?” Aerith met his curious gaze. “What about me?”

“Did you think it was a kiss?”

She tilted her head to one side. “Well, I guess his lips did touch the corner of my mouth…” She smiled coyly at him. “Why? Are you jealous?”

what gives courage
by winterune

---

She hated the sky. Always had. Yet despite the hammering in her chest, she couldn’t help but go to the station time after time, wanting to see if this time she’d have the courage to board the car and ferry herself upward. Sometimes, she’d stand here til the afternoon. Other times, her feet would retreat, tracing her steps to the park at Sector 6 where, if she was lucky, her basket of flowers would attract attention and people would come and haggle her for a bloom.

One gil for a single flower.

Zack had offered to sell them for ten.

Aerith didn’t really care as long as her blossoms could fill all of the slums.

Aerith leaned back, seemingly content with herself. “Maybe next time, you can get me a ribbon the color of the sky.”

“Another soldier for your army?”

Aerith shook her head. “It’ll be the general.”

“You already have a general,” Zack nodded at the pink ribbon she now donned on her hair—the same pink ribbon he had bought her on their first date.

“Well, that’s true.” Aerith tilted her head in contemplation. “But the pink one is me, so if I have the blue one, that one’ll be you.” She grinned, and it was the brightest, purest, most beautiful grin he had ever seen. Zack found himself helpless at the face of it.
