Wanted to give an update on what happened to me this past week.

As you may know, I've been doing a lot of things lately. I work, I write music for commissions, I have a very busy home life, I've been doing more and more performances IRL, I've been writing a lot, I'm learning German, and generally maintaining my cheery attitude as much as I can. All this, combined with trying to keep up with friends and news, has lead me to take fewer and fewer breaks for myself. I enjoy streaming a lot, and now it's down to only a few hours a week.

Recently, my wife and I welcomed her sister to our home. Sister was not safe living in the USA, and so we offered up a space for her to stay. This meant that we would start looking for a bigger apartment for all of us to live comfortably in. The apartment market in Berlin is brutal, so it's been yet another big task to do.

So, when an amazing apartment offer came across my email, I saw an opportunity to cross off a few things on my list all at once. I was so enamored that, despite hesitation from both my wife and her sister, I agreed to the offer and put down a deposit.

Of course, it was too good to be true. The amazing offer, which I emptied my bank account for, suddenly disappeared, and the scammers began to ask for even more money to "keep the reservation".

At this point, I finally realized that I had been scammed.

Now we've lost all of our money, we only have a month left on our lease before we are kicked out, and we have nothing to cover a deposit on a legitimate apartment. Today I also got an email saying that my taxes are due, and since I'm an independent contractor I am going to have to pay another large sum to the government. Which, of course, I don't have.

I don't want to make anyone feel like they need to help me. I'm currently talking to my bank, the German Police, and more apartment companies (legitimate ones I've worked with before) to try to resolve the situation. I can take on debt. Debt is not homelessness. Debt is not starvation. Your kindness and support are needed in so many places around the world.

I just wanted to let people know what happened and hopefully prevent others from falling for scams. Or, more relevant, overworking themselves to the point that they are blinded by false hopes.

I've linked a page below with some common apartment scams in Berlin (or anywhere really) and how to avoid them.
