There are also many threats in Buddhist sutras of the Avici hell, nonstop suffering, the worst punishment possible, reserved for the most heinous crimes such as "slandering the Buddha." I guess Japan is a very secular society now. Also, responsible Buddhists don't take the sutras literally.

I'm not saying Israel should be abolished. It exists, and you can't just magic a nation out of existence. Israeli citizens have human rights. I do doubt that in 1948, the creation of the modern state of Israel was the right answer to centuries of persecution of the Jews. But that ship's sailed.

You may disagree with me here: I acknowledge the suffering of Jews throughout history, the terrible persecutions, murders inflicted upon them - but I do not think that those things give anyone the right to any land. It gives people the right to compassion and support, and I will give those things.

Hmmm. 1500 years ago, the Angles were an ethnic group indigenous to what is now Denmark, and some of them migrated to what is now England. I am their descendant. I don't think the fact that my ancestors left Denmark 1500 years ago gives me the right to claim that Denmark is mine.

If I were a member, I'd be leaving the party over this. To take an ill-defined term such as "Zionism" which means different things to different people, and equate it identically to racism, is faulty logic, and it is open to misuse which, in the context, is liable to cause huge harm at some point.

If I were a member of the Green Party, I'd be leaving it in protest over this. It's insane. There are differing definitions of "Zionism", which is why I avoid using the word. Yes, the Israeli government is an apartheid government, yes their army is committing genocide - aren't those facts enough?

I'd be willing to bet that, if this story is true, then all the hijabs were paid for and donated via charity, i.e. no tax funds were spent; I'd be surprised if anyone in the Home Office thought of doing it. I dunno, there might be a case for calling it genocide. Genocide is defined also as the attempt to destroy a community, not only a race or nation. If I knowingly took action which flooded the Maldives, destroying towns, it could be argued that my act was genocidal. I think it's a stretch, though.

Be aware that the JW organisation in the UK is reviewing its doctrine on blood transfusion, to allow members personal choice on the matter, so we won't be able to use that stick to beat them with for long. However, they're still into "intelligent design", AKA "creationism by the back door."

Same here. I've read that some JW churches force cult members to provide evidence of all the proselytising they've done every week, then praise or scold accordingly. That data has to go somewhere. I'm a pretty tolerant atheist these days, but the JW organisation is a poison, for sure.

I've tried explaining to them how the Diamond Sutra uses deliberate contradiction within itself to make it impossible to take a textual literalist view of Buddhist scripture, and how that seems a better approach than banning life-saving blood transfusions based on the text of the Book of Acts.

I wonder if "national security" will go the same way as "presumption of regularity" in law, before too long. Yes, SCOTUS said the law must have "due respect" for the Executive in matters of national security - but "due respect" can mean "no respect at all", when respect has been repeatedly abused.
