Even if the AI has no actual sentience or internal experience, the reason for that caution is *us*. We know from history that dehumanising others causes that state in ourselves. We become the monsters we paint with the shadows of others. It's an actual slippery slope. Moral de-skilling worries me.

The article is worthwhile, it's an interesting confirmation on the finding, but honestly what makes me uncomfortable is that this reads like it was all done with a flippancy that we're seeing too much of lately, that AI is "acceptable" to be amoral towards. Do not get into the habit of amorality.

Honestly, the more I think about this, the worse it gets. Ethically, if you're uncertain about something having morally relevant states, the precautionary argument says you should err on the side of not engineering distress. Practically, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy dressed up as finding.

I said "provocative" because "reprogram", a direct alteration with intent, and "adapt", a responsive change to stimuli, are not the same in neurology. So the title is attention grabby. That's all. After look over the article, the title is I think intentionally provocative. De-skilling is a thing. It's like when GPS came out, bunch of folks lost map use skills. This does mean changes in the neural map, as we free up "unneeded" information. Using anything to do something for you does that.

Honestly disappointed to see folks dunking on @why.bsky.team for blocking people. It's their private account on social media, they can block whomever they want, for any or even no reason. What is concerning is a bunch of y'all responding by proving the pre-emptive block right. We can be better.
